Carson City sheriff's deputy injured after patrol vehicle hit by suspected drunk driver
A Carson City Sheriff’s Office deputy suffered moderate to minor injuries early Sunday morning after his patrol vehicle was hit by a suspected drunk driver, a Carson City sheriff's sergeant said.
The deputy was taken to the hospital with injuries sustained in the crash, which happened at around 1:20 a.m. at the intersection of Roop and William Street, said Sgt. Nate Brehm. The name of the deputy has not been released.
"He's banged up. He's going to be sore for a few days," said Brehm.
The suspected drunk driver, a 27-year-old Gardnerville woman, was not injured in the crash, which totaled the Ford Focus she was driving. She faces misdemeanor charges of DUI and running a red light. Her preliminary breath test was .188. The Nevada Highway Patrol is conducting the accident investigation due to a deputy being involved.
According to Brehm, the deputy was traveling eastbound on William Street approaching the intersection with Roop. The deputy entered the intersection on a green light when he was struck by the suspect’s vehicle traveling southbound on Roop. The suspect’s vehicle struck the deputy on the driver’s side, turning the patrol vehicle 360 degrees.
Speed may have played a factor in the collision as well as the woman admitting that she ran the red light, Brehm said. She admitted to drinking a couple beers between the hours of 5:30 and 10 p.m.
The suspect was evaluated on scene by Carson City Fire Department paramedics, and she refused transport or any treatment from the crash.
"She was out of the vehicle and walking around by the time deputies arrived on scene," said Brehm. Airbags were deployed in the vehicle she was driving.
