94 citations issued for cell phone use in Carson City, NHP distracted driving operation
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office joined forces with the Nevada Highway Patrol between April 12 and April 22 to educate the motoring public on distracted driving. The primary emphasis was to focus on drivers not using hands-free devices while driving.
The Sheriff’s Office and NHP educated the motoring public by issuing traffic citations, instructing drivers on the law, and or issued warnings.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office has seen a dramatic increase in drivers not using a hands-free device while driving. It is the law to drive a motor vehicle in the state of Nevada with a hands-free device.
It means, not holding your cellular phone in your hand for any reason to include talking, texting, using it as a GPS instrument, etc.
You can not have your phone in your hand and on speakerphone. Drivers being distracted by their cellular phone is one of the leading causes of crashes. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office urges motorists to not be on their cellular phone while driving; you will be stopped and cited.

Drive Safe Every Trip
Don’t want to get ticketed for distracted driving? Don’t do it. If you need to text, then pull over and do not drive. If you’re driving, follow these safe driving tips:
— If you are expecting a text message or need to send one, pull over and park your car in a safe location. Once you are safely off the road and parked, it is safe to text.
— Designate your passenger as your “designated texter.” Allow them access to your phone to respond to calls or messages.
— Do not engage in social media scrolling or messaging while driving. Cell phone use can be habit-forming. Struggling to not text and drive? Put the cell phone in the trunk, glove box, or the back seat of the vehicle until you arrive at your destination.
