Two aging Jump Around Carson buses to be replaced with $447K federal grant
The Carson Area Metropolitan Planning Organization will receive $447,480 in U.S. Department of Transportation funding to replace two buses in the Jump Around Carson (JAC) fleet that have exceeded their useful life, officials announced this week.
The replacement vehicles will help reduce downtime for JAC's fleet and help the agency save on maintenance costs while keeping its assets in a state of good repair.
Elsewhere in the Silver State, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada will receive $4,588,766 for new bus shelters and improve existing bus shelters by adding solar lighting. RTC also will receive funding to make upgrades to its maintenance and passenger facilities.
Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe will receive $1,500,000 to construct an operations and administrative facility. The new facility will improve safety for employees and allow for more efficient transit operations in northwestern Nevada.
In all, Nevada will receive $6.5 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation to modernize and Improve bus infrastructure.
“Every day, working families across America rely on buses, and these grants will ensure that these vital services continue to be both safe and efficient,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao. The secretary was in Carson City on Wednesday to announce a $7.5 million grant for a South Carson Street project.
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration announced approximately $264 million in project selections to improve the safety and reliability of America’s bus systems and enhance mobility for transit riders across the country.
A total of 139 projects in 52 states and territories will receive funding from FTA’s Buses and Bus Facilities Infrastructure Investment Program.
The grants will fund projects to replace, rehabilitate, and purchase buses and related equipment as well as projects to purchase, rehabilitate and construct bus-related facilities, such as buildings for bus storage and maintenance.
“FTA is proud to help bring new and rehabilitated buses, facilities, and equipment to communities across the country,” said FTA Acting Administrator K. Jane Williams. “This marks a step forward in improving mobility for the millions of Americans who travel by bus to work, school, healthcare, and other services.”
