Transportation secretary, Nevada leaders announce $7.5 million grant for South Carson Street project
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao joined Nevada Sen. Dean Heller, Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell, and other state and local officials at 9 this morning to officially announce a $7.5 million grant that DOT recently awarded Carson City for the South Carson Street Complete Streets project.
Last month, U.S. DOT awarded $7,570,202 to the Carson City Public Works Department through the Department’s highly competitive Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grant program. The project will improve pedestrian safety in the area and enhance commercial and business access.

The event took place in front of the Nevada State Capitol Building. There was a presence of public safety officers in the area and traffic was re-directed.
In October 2017, Sen. Heller urged Secretary Chao to support the South Carson Street project, noting that it will “drive economic growth and investment directly into the heart of our state capital.”
According to Carson City Public Works, the funding will be used to transform South Carson Street from a state-owned major arterial into a calmer, city owned multi-modal street.
Stretching from 5th Street in the north to the terminus of I-580 in the south, the project will include improved business access, pedestrian safety measures, a multi-use path, landscaping, dedicated bicycle facilities, ADA-compliant sidewalks and curb ramps, stormwater infrastructure, lighting for safety, new traffic signals, fiber optic communications, and narrowed travel lanes.
Heller supported funding for the TIGER grant program with the passage of Public Law 114-113, which allocated $500 million to the TIGER program to remain available through fiscal year 2019. He also supported the government spending measure, which was recently signed into law, that allocated $1.5 billion to the TIGER program.
