Hello fellow anglers, Fall is definitely here. Renee and I took a trip through Alpine County last week to enjoy the fall colors. Many trees have turned, while others are just starting to get their true colors.

To get a good look at the viewing, venture up through Highway 88 from Woodfords to Caples Lake. Another good area of fall color viewing is from Woodfords on Highway 89 up to Kinney reservoir on Highway 4 .

Three-term chair of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Norm Harry died this week. He was 65.

Harry was an advocate for tribal water rights, and he was instrumental in getting the Truckee River Operating Agreement signed. That agreement designated much of the Truckee River waters to the tribe and settled claims among multiple parties for water rights.

Harry was a champion of the land, water and Indigenous people.

The Nevada Division of Emergency Management is pleased to name Cassandra Darrough as DEM's Tribal Coordinator, helping with emergency management support for Nevada’s 27 federally-recognized Tribal Nations in close collaboration with Nevada Indian Commission.

In late March, the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe sent a letter to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation requesting that the agency delay a public comment period for a controversial and complicated project to do maintenance on the Truckee Canal, a manmade diversion off the Truckee River.

Tribal members, conservationists and students, bundled up in thick coats and beanies, gathered in two rows fanning out from transport trailers to watch the release into tribal land, an area usually closed to the public. Bighorn sheep, separated into two trailers, rushed out in waves.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife and the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe are set to release 22 bighorn sheep Monday to the Lake Range on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation in a historic project between NDOW and the Tribe to reintroduce the species to the mountains surrounding Pyramid Lake where they once thrived.

CARSON CITY — Leaders from 13 Nevada tribes have sent letters to President Donald Trump and Energy Secretary Rick Perry protesting the federal government’s shipment of a half metric ton of weapons-grade plutonium to the Nevada National Security Site without informing state government officials or the tribes.

UPDATE 8AM: Less than 10 days after Nevada Gov. Sandoval sent a letter to President Donald Trump asking for federal assistance due to flooding in early January, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has responded to the call.

The Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties will have 3 guest speakers for their February breakfast meeting. The meeting is on Thurs February 9th at 9am at the Silver Springs Community Center.

Speakers include Lori Nichols from Foster Care Recruitment, and Sally Hazard from the Fernley office for the Advanced Foster Care Program. They will explain the pressing need for foster homes in the Lyon and Storey County region, and offer ways to help increase the number of foster parents.

The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe would like to advise travelers going to the Burning Man Festival to obey posted speed limits, and to slow down and keep your distance while traveling through the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation. The Tribe would like motorists to be aware of the dangers associated with high speeds on two lane highways; all State Routes on the reservation are two lane roads with very narrow shoulders.

The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe is pleased to announce that the 2016 Pyramid Lake War Memorial Celebration will take place on Friday May, 20th in Nixon, NV. The Tribe would like to invite the public and their families to participate in the annual Sunrise Ceremony and the Eagle Staff Run walk/run along the Truckee River from the Numana Hatchery to the Nixon Gym.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Great Basin Native Artists, with art works by seven Native American artists at the Carson City Community Center's Sierra Room that is running now through July 6, 2016. The Community Center is located at 851 E. William Street, Carson City.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Mark Amodei (NV-2) commended the House Natural Resources Committee’s unanimous passage Wednesday of his bill to allow public land to be held in trust for six different tribes throughout Nevada. H.R. 2733, the Nevada Native Nations Land Act, would greatly benefit the people of these regions by providing increased opportunities for economic development.

Senior Airman Michael Anthony Beaton, 26, a member of the 152nd Maintenance Squadron, Nevada Air National Guard, died this week in a boating accident at Pyramid Lake.

Christine Braunworth is a senior at the University of Nevada, Reno and she is determined to make an impact in the Native American community. Braunworth, who will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in social work this spring, recently helped secure a $10,000 grant from Native STAND, a comprehensive, sustainable curriculum for training peer educators who promote healthy decision making for Native youth.

What began last year with a desire by five local women to bring international films to Carson City will this year be a multi-venue, free three-day event, Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 5-7. Last year’s event was a rousing success, paving the way for this year’s larger festival.

The Carson City Community Center and Western Nevada College will be venues for viewing three foreign feature-length films, three independently produced films, and several Brewery Arts Center contest-winning short films.

By suspension vote, the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday passed the Nevada Native Nations Lands Act, legislation sponsored by Congressman Mark Amodei of Nevada's second district.

The legislation includes six tribal land measures, as well as a smaller conveyance to the City of Elko. The bill was amended to match the Senate version, which was reported out of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee in August.

In a hopeful sign for the Northern Nevada lands bills awaiting a vote in the Senate, Congressman Mark Amodei's (NV-2) Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe – Fish Springs Ranch Settlement Act last night passed the Senate and is now headed to the President for signature.

"I want to thank Senators Reid and Heller for their work to pass this bill, as well as Senator Flake for releasing his hold," said Amodei. "This is good news for water users in the Truckee Meadows."

The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday passed Nevada Congressman Mark Amodei’s bill known as Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe – Fish Springs Ranch Settlement Act, by a bipartisan voice vote.

The bill, H.R. 3716, would ratify an agreement between the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe and Fish Springs Ranch to resolve a dispute over water rights near Reno. It is expected to be passed by the Senate and signed into law.
