Carson High Visited by Army National Guard
Carson High School students and faculty were treated to an aviation display when the Nevada Army National Guard flew in its CH47 Chinook helicopter for a few hours this afternoon.
The Carson City stopover was part of a planned community awareness day at the high school, where students could see up close the transport helicopter and ask questions among Guard staff and recruiters and inquire about opportunities.
While many students associate the military with combat operations, Sgt. Nico Sunseri said the community display gives Army National Guard members the opportunity to educate high school students and the public about what they do on a national and local level.
The Nevada Army National Guard are often first responders to national emergencies and disasters such as, most recently, floods in Arizona, Hurricane Katrina and locally with the January 2008 Fernley flood. The Nevada Army National Guard was among the first Guard outfits in the U.S. to respond to Hurricane Katrina, Sunseri noted.
"We're a part of the community and generate a lot of public interest and we want people to know what we do," he said.
