CC Firefighters get four year contract. Two years with raises, two without
City Supervisors on Thursday agreed to a new four year labor contract between Carson City Firefighters and the City that is a substantial departure from previous contracts.
This one has no pay raises in it for the first two years beginning this July. No cost of living increase. No merit increase. However, in years three and four, fire fighters will get a cost of living increase of 2% and other "contract adjustments" bringing the contract's higher cost to the city of $107,000. Of course, everyone hopes that the city's financial condition will be substantially better than now, in the middle of the worst recession ion over 80 years.
Recent budget decisions by the board called for eventual layoffs of up to six fire fighters and 23 sheriff's office employees Over half of the Sheriff's employees were to be sworn deputies. However, with the use of landfill closure funds, a voluntary separation package for other city workers who might not otherwise retire right away or not leave city employment for other reasons, and a tax revenue bonus from the school district, there is likely to be a lot of jobs saved in the Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Ken Furlong told CarsonNow.org that if things work out the way he's hoping, he may be able to preserve half of those scheduled to be laid off from his department.
