Survey finds Carson City improves in areas of health prevention, lags in childhood poverty, STDs
Survey results are compiled county-by-county in an easy-to-use snapshot. The local-level data allows each state to see how its counties compare on 30 factors that influence health including education, housing, violent crime, jobs, diet and exercise.
The scientific results also show what many leaders in Carson City have noted, including violent crime trending downward and the community having easy access to exercise opportunities such as biking and hiking trails, the Carson City Aquatic Facility, parks and recreation activities and nearby ski resorts at Lake Tahoe.
Some of the improvements may account for Carson City having fewer premature deaths than in previous years though Carson City still lags behind statewide and nationally for being physically inactive. And even though Carson City has been ground zero for downwind smoke from major California wildfires in the past two years, its air quality particulate matter has improved.
The capital city still ranks high in areas of unemployment, childhood poverty and sexually transmitted diseases. Go here to see the snapshot for Carson City.
Neighboring Lyon County also saw improvements in diabetic monitoring, preventable hospital stays and air particulate matter. The county, however, saw its rankings get worse in areas of adult obesity, physical inactivity and sexually transmitted diseases. Go here for Lyon County's survey results.
Douglas County improved in areas of preventable hospital stays, and diabetic monitoring but fell in areas of mammography screenings, adult obesity and children living in poverty. Go here for the Douglas County results.
Published online at countyhealthrankings.org, the rankings help counties understand what influences how healthy residents are and how long they will live. The Rankings are unique in their ability to measure the current overall health of each county in all 50 states.
They also look at a variety of measures that affect the future health of communities, such as high school graduation rates, access to healthy foods, rates of smoking, obesity, and teen births. Communities use the rankings to identify and garner support for local health improvement initiatives among government agencies, healthcare providers, community organizations, business leaders, policy makers, and the public.
