Survey finds Carson City improves in areas of health prevention, lags in childhood poverty, STDs

Even with an aging population, Carson City is showing improvements in a number of public health areas including preventable hospital stays, diabetic monitoring and mammography screening, according to a nationwide health survey released Wednesday through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.

Survey results are compiled county-by-county in an easy-to-use snapshot.

You probably won’t read this, since it’s about exercise, but I think it’s time for a few words about the benefits of sweating. First of all, exercise isn’t supposed to be easy—especially if you have been a lounge lizard for years. And, no it isn’t over in six weeks. The Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation announced that the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Elko Boys & Girls Club (Elko, Nev.) will both receive a $10,000 start-up grant to implement Triple Play programming. Additionally, Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows (Reno, Nev.) and Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada (Carson, Nev.) will receive $5,000 Triple Play Healthy Habits grants to provide programming focused on teaching the importance of healthy eating habits and being physically active.

Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of men and women in the United States – more than cancer, accidents, and communicable diseases.

Each year, nearly one in four deaths is caused by heart disease, but luckily, this is something we can all work together to change. UNR video game project to offer exercise for blind children

A research project at the University of Nevada, Reno has received a $410,220 grant to explore how video exercise games can be played without using visual feedback so the visually impaired, especially adolescents, can improve their health through increased activity. The funding comes from the human-centered computing program of the National Science Foundation.
