Senators Baseball: Errors plague Carson, fall to Reed 10-3
After an incredible Carson comeback victory against the Reed Raiders where Bryce Moyle recorded another 13 strikeouts, the Senators returned to Ron McNutt Field in Carson City Thursday for an intense rubber match again with the Raiders.
Along with starting pitchers Ben Nelson (Carson) and David Goodman (Reed) the game made for an intresting matchup. The first inning was firmly in the Raiders' grasp as rightfielder Jon Pinto's double and three costly errors by the Senators lead to a quick disadvantage in the score, putting Reed up 2-0.
Just as soon as Reed took the lead, Carson answered back with a 3-second inning of their own.
A leadoff double by Colby Zemp, and RBI's by Jesse Lopez and Abel Carter sparked a ferocious resurgence in the Senators, tying the game 3-3. The third, fourth and fifth innings were highlighted by tremendous relief pitching and defense from both teams.
For Carson, Kyle Glanzman came in relief for Nelson in the 4th inning, and carried the load on the mound while keeping the Raider offense scoreless through 2 innings. For Reed, Cameron Beard found his groove early, keeping the Senator offense silent throughout the rest of the intense matchup.
The sixth inning sparked new life for Reed, as the Raiders capitalized on a two hit inning, adding once crucial run to the scoreboard, giving them a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Carson bats continued to struggle with Beard on the mound, as they hoped to take care of business heading into the final inning of play. The seventh inning proved difficult for the Senators as Reed added onto the lead with RBI's from Joey Brown and Miah Harmon.
Difficulties continued for Carson. With the bases loaded, an RBI single from Ryan Murphy spiraled out of control with three consecutive errors that cleared the bases and added four more runs to the already comfortable lead for Reed. Seven errors ultimately cost the Senators the game as they lost 10-3.
Ben Nelson struggled to find any rhythm from the mound, as he pitched only 3 innings allowing 4 hits, 3 walks, and 3 earned runs with 2 strikeouts. Abel Carter added an RBI single to his statsheet, Jesse Lopez hit a sacrifice RBI along with an impressive diving catch.
Bryce Moyle and Kahle Good each added a single. For Reed, Beard picked up the slack in relief for Goodman. Pinto finished 2 for 4 with a double, single, and 1 RBI as the instant sparkplug for the Reed offense.
After the game second baseman Kahle Good spoke about the adjustments needed to rebound off of such a tough loss.
"We need to work on our game in practice, and become fundamentaly sound anyway possible whether that's a game of catch or anything," he said. "It is a tough loss, we had a terrible seventh inning with three errors that cost us the game. But to rebound, we must clear our heads in California and have a fun time there as well as improving on the fundamentals to get the win."
Carson will go on a four game California road trip, and will return home April 4th looking to get back on another win streak.
