Carson City sheriff’s log: Inmate who consumed hand sanitizer booked for assault, resisting

A Carson City jail inmate who allegedly consumed hand sanitizer, was booked Saturday on suspicion of gross misdemeanor assault on a police officer and resisting after he charged at jail staff in which a taser was used to stop him, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

The 33-year-old Carson City man also faces a misdemeanor charge of battery after allegedly spitting on a Carson City Fire Department member.

According to the arrest report, a deputy assigned to the jail was in the booking area when he heard screaming in the hallway. He saw the man with both arms extended and his hands clenched into fists. The man was cursing and moving closer to the deputy and another jail deputy.

The man was told to stop but did not respond to commands. A deputy removed a taser from its holders and gave commands for the man to stop and get on the ground. The man charged toward the deputies with both fists and appeared as though he was going to strike them. The taser was deployed into the abdomen of the man where he was detained and handcuffed.

The man appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance. The deputy attempted to have the man provide a preliminary breath sample and was able to get a partial sample of .066. It was later discovered the man had consumed one bag of hand sanitizer that was obtained from a secured cabinet, the arrest report states. The hand sanitizer contains ethyl alcohol at 70 percent. He was taken to Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center for treatment. Bail: $4,774.

— A 20-year-old transient was arrested Sunday, 9:29 p.m. in the area of Shriver and Siskiyou Drive on a misdemeanor warrant, contempt of court, issued March 9, 2016 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $500.

— A 42-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 9:38 p.m. in the 3100 block of Shriver Drive on two counts violation of bail conditions, obstructing and being an ex-felon failing to register, all misdemeanors. According to the arrest report, officers were called to a home regarding a man who was trying to force his way into the residence he lived at.

The woman at the residence said her boyfriend, whom they have a 7-year-old daughter together, was told to stay away from the residence until Monday when he would then enter into a 30-day drug rehab program. He was given $140 to stay in a motel, and CPS made arrangements for the man to enter drug rehab beginning Monday, the woman told deputies.

She said the suspect went to the residence and tried to convince her to let him inside but she refused. She said the man banged on the door multiple times and had flipped the power off and on from the fuse box on the side of the house. She told dispatch she believed the man was under the influence of drugs.

When deputies arrived they called for the man to come out but he ran around the east side of the house and fled the scene. Officers spoke with the woman who advised there wasn’t a protection order in place and was unaware if CPS initiated any paperwork that would bar the man from the residence. Deputies convinced the woman to go to a friend’s home for the night as she was afraid the man would return.

Officers cleared the scene and a few minutes later the woman called 911 and reported the man was on the roof of the house. Deputies returned and saw the man jump off the roof and run. He was detained after a brief foot pursuit.

Dispatch advised the man was on Alternative Sentencing for two separate cases and he was an ex-felon who had last registered on Woodside Drive several years ago, the arrest report states.

He was arrested for two counts violation of bail conditions and being an ex-felon failing to register. The man told the deputy he had been drug and alcohol free for several years but recently relapsed. He said he lost a large amount of money while gambling and started drinking beer which led him to eventually smoking meth. He said he regretted the situation and expressed his desire to get clean again so he could be a part of his daughter’s life. He admitted he had not registered for some time and thought he only had to register once after being let out of prison. Bail: $6,709.
