Carson High School student wins $1,000 Edible Pedal 100 Scholarship
Mikeala Asby, a Carson High School culinary arts student will receive a $1,000 college scholarship from the Rotary Club of Reno Sunrise for working at the Club’s 7th annual “Edible Pedal 100” bicycle ride.
The ride features rest stops staffed by area high school students and every year the Carson City rest stop is staffed by culinary arts students from Carson High School. A total of $5,000 in college scholarships will be awarded this year.
Mikaela is a third year culinary student who is also in the ROTC program. She maintains honors course even though she competes in both culinary competitions and Rifle events through ROTC. She volunteers to come in on her off periods to help with the culinary one students.
Mikaela took second in the Nevada State ProStart competition. She has volunteered more than 100 hours so far this year. She is a leader in the culinary program and a mentor to the underclass students. She was named CTE student of the week in February, 2018.
The Edible Pedal 100 is a recreational bike ride with ride routes of 10, 24, 52, 74, and 10 miles. This is meant to appeal to riders of varying abilities. All routes start at Bowers Mansion State Park and go south through Washoe Valley, Carson City, Genoa, up to Lake Tahoe on Kingsbury Grade, along Lake Tahoe and back down Spooner Summit to Carson City.
The different rides have different turn around points. The rides are served by 5 rides stops providing food and beverages served by Carson, Douglas, and Washoe County School Districts students. At the end of the ride there is a post-ride barbecue for all riders and volunteers. Proceeds of the ride go to programs for youth in Northern Nevada.
Registration is open for the Sept. 16, 2018 ride. Early registration features reduced rates. Riders may register here on the webpage.
