Klondike Derby: Scouts test their outdoor skills at Lake Tahoe
More than 130 Scouts and adult leaders participated in the 2015 Pinenut District Klondike Derby at Sugar Pine Point State Park at South Lake Tahoe on January 23-24.
The weather was beautiful, chilly and not enough snow. Scouts completed in events that tested their outdoor skills. This included shelter building, fire building, knot tying, First Aid, signaling and even entertainment. Each Scout patrol brought its sled containing essential equipment needed for the competition.
There also was a sled race on the one small patch of ice/snow that remained. Minden’s Troop 340 took top honors at the event. One event was ice fishing and Scouts had to fish for their supper.
Photos 1: Using only tinder and wood, Scouts participated in a timed event to build a fire and melt 2 cups of snow while maintaining a boil for 1 minute. Had the fire gone out, the patrol would have had to start over.
Photo 2: Scouts had 5 minutes to decide on a method of signaling followed by 5 minutes to send a silent message to a line-of-sight outpost.
