All-new Carson City Fair looking for sponsors, donors
Organizers of the inaugural Carson City Fair are reaching out to the community for sponsors and donors of the mid-summer event making its debut at Fuji Park in July.
The county-wide fair is not to be confused with the Nevada State Fair, said University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) educator Lindsay Chichester, Ph.D., one of the event organizers.
"The most important thing to know is that the Nevada State Fair, LLC is a different event," she said.
The Nevada State Fair found a home at Mills Park in Carson City, where it debuted in 2016 after a six-year hiatus that had ended a 136-year run.
Nevada's longest running event had previously been held at the Reno Livestock Events Center before the fair board voted to cancel it in early 2011.
The 2017 Nevada State Fair is scheduled for June 8-11 at Mills Park in Carson City.
The Carson City Fair, on the other hand, is an entirely unrelated event planned for July 27-30 at Fuji Park in South Carson City, Chichester said.
Featuring a carnival, exhibits, food vendors and live entertainment, the all-new Carson City Fair has been conceptualized as a more conventional county fair for the area, she said.
"This is an event for the community, by non-profit community partners," Chichester said. "Several non-profit groups have been instrumental in planning this more traditional fair. In turn, we will be seeking volunteers, and sponsorships/donors to make it possible."
The Carson City Fair, she said, was conceived following concerns from the community about the absence of agricultural exhibits at previous fair events.
"People all over the community wanted to see the youth and livestock at a fair again," she said. "So that is what we are doing. We are bringing back a traditional fair to Carson that includes everything everybody expects from a local fair."
The UNCE, she said, is taking the lead on building agricultural exhibits from youth programs like 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA) as well as others in the community.
"Youth and livestock, horticulture, crops, static exhibits for both youth and the community," Chichester said.
Rural Nevada Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is handling the carnival and vendors, she said.
The Northern Nevada Antique Power Club of Gardnerville, featuring its antique tractors and engines, will also be providing attractions and exhibits at the Carson City Fair, Chichester said.
"We hope that other non-profits will pick up various pieces of the fair that are left and make it a community event," she said.
A few of the loose ends still needing to be funded, she said, are the fair's daily contests and entertainment features.
Because the Carson City Fair is a new event to the area, donors and sponsors are critical to financing the start-up costs, Chichester said.
"Since we are starting from scratch on this fair, we are seeking donors and sponsors to help fund the majority of it," she said. "Everything from the Fuji Park rental to trophies and awards for the youth."
Sponsorship consists of five different financial levels — priced between $250 and $3,000 — according to the UNCE in Carson City.
The next planning meeting for the Carson City Fair is scheduled for Feb. 21 from 4-6 p.m. at the UNCE Office in Carson City, 2621 Northgate Lane, Suite 15.
