A series of storms will impact the Carson City region this week with strong winds, periods of heavy mountain snow, and heavy rainfall, according to the National Weather Service.
A High Wind Warning is in effect for the Carson City, Carson Valley, Dayton, Virginia City and Reno and Sparks areas through 8 p.m. Monday.
Strong winds will intensity on the ridges and foothills overnight, with winds picking up in the valleys by daybreak Monday. Strong winds will continue through early Monday evening before diminishing, according to the weather service.
Valley winds will be south to southwest 20 to 40 mph with gusts 50 to 65 mph. Wind gusts through Washoe Valley and the foothills could exceed 70 mph. Motorists can expect hazardous travel conditions in wind prone areas. A few outages are possible and trees weakened by recent heavy rains and snow could be prone to falling in these high winds, according to the weather service.
Bring in the small pets and secure the loose outdoor patio furniture and trash cans.
The Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for valley areas including Carson City, Dayton, Virginia City, Carson Valley, Reno and Sparks areas as well as the Lake Tahoe area. Torrential rains are possible in mountains Monday night through Tuesday. There will be increased risk of rock slides and travel delays due to low visibility and water on roads.
The weather service advises people to keep flood protection measures in place, and be sure drains are cleared of debris and snow. Plan for rises and possible flooding along streams and poor drainage areas (and some rivers) this coming week. Highest risk is for the mountains and foothill areas, possibly lower elevations.
Meanwhile, there's a Winter Storm Warning for much of the Lake Tahoe and Sierra area through 10 p.m. Monday and a Flood Watch from Monday night through Tuesday night. Flooding will be likely Monday night and continuing through Wednesday, mainly for poor drainage areas, creeks, and streams, according to the weather service.
A second storm Tuesday into Wednesday is likely to bring heavy mountain rainfall and a risk for flooding of streams and poor drainage areas.
A third storm Thursday into Friday will bring more rain and snow to the region.
