Final day of Arlington Square Ice Rink in downtown Carson City
Ice skaters have until 10 p.m. tonight to enjoy the Arlington Square Ice Rink set up in the parking lot between Robinson and Spear streets in downtown Carson City.
Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Deputy Director Steve Brunner confirmed that Friday, Jan. 27 is the ice rink's final day of operation for the season.
The rink, sponsored by the Carson City Downtown Business Association, is closing about a week earlier than it normally does, he said.
"The ice rink has historically been open for an additional week into the first part of February," Brunner said. "However, this season we decided to close it a week earlier because historical data shows a steep decline in attendance during the last week."
Brunner said the city had been paying out more money to staff the rink than it was generating revenue late in the season.
"It did not make fiscal sense to keep it open longer, so we made the decision early on in the season to close it a week early," he said. "We understand this may be disappointing news for many who have enjoyed this season’s ice rink and were looking forward to a few more days of ice skating."
Brunner said in spite of the early closure, the ice rink was once again enjoyed by many locals and visitors alike over the course of the season.
"We would like to thank everyone who came out this season and supported the Arlington Square Ice Rink," he said. "[We] apologize for any inconvenience this may cause those who had plans to come out this weekend."
The first of two skate sessions Friday starts at 3 p.m. and runs until 5 p.m. A second late session starts up at 6 p.m. tonight and goes until 10 p.m.
Fees are $7/$5 for children, plus $3 skate rental. Today's after school special is $5 for elementary and middle school students. The fee includes skate rental and one hot beverage during the first session.
