Carson City commute for Jan. 23: Road controls, school delays or closures in effect
Commuters coming into or going out of Carson City Monday morning can expect hazardous driving conditions on roads and highways in town and surrounding areas with packed snow and ice.
Motorists are advised to give themselves extra time to reach their destinations.
Carson City School District is on a two-hour delay Monday morning. Buses will pick students up approximately two hours later than the regular scheduled pick up times, the school district website said.
In Douglas County, officials made an announcement Monday morning that all schools in the district will be closed.
Western Nevada College (WNC) in Carson City is also on a two-hour delay.
All Washoe County public and private schools are closed Monday, including Bishop Manogue High School, according to KRNV Channel 4 in Reno. Storey County schools are also closed today.
Lyon County schools are currently on a one-hour delay, News 4 reports this morning.
Both Interstate 580 and Old U.S. Highway 395 Alternate through Washoe Valley require chains or snow tires for travel between Carson City and Reno beginning at the county line for about seven miles on Old 395 and 15 miles on I-580, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) reported.
Traction tires or devices are also required on Kingsbury Grade for about 12 miles on State Route 207, beginning at mile post zero in Douglas County, as well as for 13 miles on SR 208 into the Smith Valley beginning at the U.S. Highway 395 junction.
Highway 395 for a 12-mile stretch in southern Douglas County from the state line, as well as a three-mile stretch from mile post 28.8 to 31.4, require chains or snow tires.
U.S. Highway 50 from the Carson City line at Spooner Summit to mile post 7.6 toward the Nevada state capital requires chains or snow tires, as well as for 14.5 miles into Douglas County along the shore of Lake Tahoe, NDOT said.
Highway 50 east from mile post 14.0 in Carson City all the way through Lyon County to mile post 18.5 in Churchill County have chain or snow tire requirements, including the Dayton Valley, Stagecoach and Silver Springs, NDOT reported.
SR 341 going up Geiger Grade from Washoe County into Storey County has traction tires or devices required, as well as SR 341 from the Highway 50 junction in Lyon County to mile post 10.8 in Storey County.
SR 431 from its junction with Highway 395 in South Reno up to and over the Mount Rose Summit and down to Incline Village requires chains or snow tires for a 22-mile stretch.
Snow is expected to dissipate Monday to a 30 percent chance with a high temperature of around 33 degrees in Carson City, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno reports.
Conditions are expected to be clearing Monday into Tuesday with an overnight low of around 19. Skies should be partly to mostly sunny Tuesday into Wednesday before another front moves in late Wednesday night with a 20 percent chance of snow after 10 p.m.
The system should be on its way out by Thursday evening, the NWS said, leading to partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies through the weekend with highs in the mid to upper 30s and lows in the teens.
