Carson City to host Western Airstream Convention in October
We know them by their distinctive look.
Airstream travel trailers are unmistakable, ageless, and are coming to the Nevada state capital in October for the 2017 Western Airstream Convention.
For three days, Oct. 6-8, Airstreams in droves are expected to camp out in Carson City — including as many as 30 parked along the downtown corridor of North Carson Street for the entire event — giving locals and visitors alike plenty of iconic "silver bullet" eye candy to admire.
"The Airstream is an iconic brand recognized around the world and is a piece of contemporary American history," said Carson City Visitors Bureau (CCVB) Executive Director Joel Dunn. "It embodies a lifestyle rich in travel and appreciation of the outdoors."
He said in upwards of 100 Airstreamers have already registered for the rally and are expected to participate in "Airstreams On the Main," the focus of which will be Carson City's main street: North Carson Street downtown.
Dunn said this is the second Airstream event to be held in Carson City since 2015, and the first along the recently redesigned downtown corridor of North Carson Street.
There are very few urban rallies nationwide where the center of activity is downtown, he said. Most are held at campgrounds.
The October rally in downtown Carson City, organized by the Sierra Nevada Airstreamers, will be the first urban rally of its kind in the west, Dunn said.
"The concept of an urban rally puts attendees right in the heart of the city and showcases our shopping, dining, nightlife, and history right out the door of their camper," he said.
Camper open houses and other events will occur throughout the three-day weekend celebration of Airstreamer culture, the CCVB said.
Trailers parked along North Carson Street will utilize the 15 parallel pull-outs created from the street's redesign in 2016, Dunn said.
Two Airstream trailers will fit in one parallel space, he said.
The rest of the Airstreams will have parking close to downtown, he said, as the CCVB is currently negotiating with private parking lots and other properties in the area to host rally-goers.
The Airstream invasion will share a Saturday with the Downtown Business Association's monthly Wine Walk, held the first Saturday of every month in downtown Carson City, as well as the seasonal Ghost Walk around the city's historic west side neighborhood.
North Carson Street will not be closed to traffic for the convention in spite of trailers parked along the street, the CCVB said.
"The footprint will be North Carson Street from William to Fifth streets," Dunn said.
No additional traffic controls are anticipated, he said, beyond existing crosswalks and signals.
There is no admission to the downtown Airstream rally, Dunn said. It is open and free to the public.
