Saturday's Trash Mob to Clean Up East Bank of Carson River
The local nonprofit Muscle Powered is known in the community as an organization that promotes walking and biking as healthy, green transportation alternatives. According to their website, Muscle Powered's motto is "Walk, Bike, Build," and along with building comes maintenance.
Maintaining the community’s recreational areas is the focus of the group’s Trash Mob, a grassroots effort to remove trash from areas that people use for hiking, bike riding, or simply enjoying the outdoors.
Muscle Powered has built a strong relationship with the Carson City’s Parks, Recreation and Open Space division, who help remove the trash after volunteers gather and bag it.
According to Randy Gaa with Muscle Powered, “Everyone at Parks & Rec has been great to work with. I write an email to Ann Bollinger, the Open Space manager, and she arranges to have the Park Ranger, John Costello, show up after the Trash Mob is over and take the bagged garbage to the dump. They also help us identify locations for Trash Mobs. It works out great.”
Over the past two years, Muscle Powered along with hundreds of volunteers has removed several tons of trash from the recreational areas in Carson City. “Sometimes it’s disheartening to see a couch or tires dumped along the river.” said Gaa. “But then you see 25 or 30 people show up early on a Saturday morning to help clean up and your faith in people is restored.”
The next Trash Mob is scheduled for this Saturday, Jan. 20 from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. along the east bank of the Carson River off of Sierra Vista Lane. Volunteers will meet up at the dirt lot just south of the bridge on Sierra Vista Lane and Muscle Powered will pass out work gloves and trash bags.
