Full moon hike at Washoe Lake State Park, history talks at Mormon Station
State parks has a couple of nearby events coming up next week. Washoe Lake State Park will offer up a full moon hike along the Deadman’s Creek Trail. Walkers and hikers will explore the park by the light of the full moon on this moderate, one mile, round-trip hike to the gazebo overlooking Washoe Lake.
Participants should wear sturdy hiking shoes, wear warm clothes and bring a flashlight.
WHEN: Saturday, January 23, 5:30 p.m.
WHERE: Washoe Lake State Park Maze Parking Lot. Take Exit 44 off of I-580, drive four
miles north on Eastlake Blvd., and the park’s entrance is on the left. Turn left past the fee booth
and it is the first parking lot on the right.
COST: This hike is free after the park’s entrance fee of $7 per vehicle; there is a $2 discount for
Nevada residents. We accept cash or check.

Meanwhile, join park rangers at Mormon Station State Historic Park in Genoa Jan. 23-24, Saturday and Sunday, for a history series covering early settlement and historic trails through Nevada.
On Saturday, Jan. 23: History Talk: Mormon Pioneers in Nevada Mormon pioneers were some of the first people to settle the great state of Nevada. Come find out just who these pioneers were and what brought them to the region. This historic talk will cover the history of Mormon settlement in both the northern and southern regions of Nevada, from Genoa to Las Vegas.

WHERE: Inside the wagon shed at Mormon Station State Historic Park. Meet at the museum. Mormon Station is located 20 minutes south of Carson City, about one hour south of Reno via Hwy 395 and approximately 20 minutes from South Lake Tahoe via Hwy 207.
WHO: This event is free and open to the public. All ages welcome.
On Jan. 24: History Talk: Nevada’s Historic Trails
Nevada is the driest state in America, while also being the seventh largest state by total land area. This made navigating across the state a tricky journey for many early pioneers. Come find out how early travelers made their way across this vast, dry expanse of land. This historic talk will cover a brief history of three major historic trails through Nevada. These trails include the California Trail and Pony Express Trail in the northern part of the state, as well as the lesser known Old Spanish Trail in southern Nevada.
