Groups Rally Support for Dayton Food Pantry
Dayton, Nevada – This week’s Dayton Food Pantry news includes recognition for three groups that recently contributed to the Pantry: Volunteers in Policing (V.I.P.s), Girl Scout Service Unit 625, and the Misfits Theater Group. Dayton Food Pantry manager Alie Trier said, “This Thanksgiving we were so grateful for the hundreds of turkeys and hams, side items, and checks donated by the community. Now we even have enough to provide more than 500 more familes with spiral hams for Christmas. Thank you awesome community members!”
Girls Scouts: This month Girl Scout Service Unit 625 (Comstock Service Unit) and their Service Unit Manager Casey Rizzo worked hard to gather an entire car load of food donations from the Dayton community and they have big plans for more service projects.
Misfits Theater Group: Once again, the Misfits Theater Group donated to the Pantry. Their production of "How The Little Bad Elves Became Good" or "Short Is The New Tall" generated a whopping $1066.40 donation.
Volunteers in Policing: And in November, volunteers in Policing (V.I.P.s) helped make sure the Pantry had enough nonperishable food for the Thanksgiving holiday by hosting yet another successful Stuff a Cop Car With Food event at Smith’s Grocery.
Holiday Hours: The Pantry will be closed for the holidays on December 25 and 26 and on January 1st. From the Pantry site at 209 Dayton Valley Road, emergency food boxes are normally accessible Monday-Thursday from 10am-4pm (emergency boxes are limited to one a week per household). The Pantry normally offers its primary food distribution on the third Saturday of each month from noon to 3pm at Sutro Elementary School in Dayton.
How Does the Pantry Work? People of the Dayton area work with the nonprofit Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties in volunteer service to keep the Pantry going strong. Volunteers range from the very young to elders, and come from all walks of life. They're united by the belief that no one should go hungry. Healthy Communities funds management and oversight of the Pantry, maintains required data reporting such as the number of boxes and pounds of food distributed, and provides training for the dedicated volunteers who give thousands of hours of service to the Pantry each year. Coalition staff help write and manage grants to support the Pantry as well. The Pantry collects donated food through Food Bank of Northern Nevada and benefits from reduced price rates from many area grocery stores. Through grants, USDA, fundraisers, food drives, and generous donations from farmers, diverse groups, businesses and individuals in the region, the Pantry is able to help people of all ages avoid hunger.
Part of a Regional Food Hub: The Dayton Food Pantry is one "spoke" in Healthy Communities’ regional Healthy Food Hub, an effort to increase access to and demand for affordable, local and sustainably grown food. For additional information about the Pantry, call 246-7834.
