Unclaimed remains of 27 veterans to receive a military funeral in Fernley

Event Date:
September 22, 2017 - 2:00pm

On Friday, Sept. 22, 2017 the remains of 27 veterans will finally receive the military burial and honor they were promised through their service in the U.S. Armed Forces. The service will be held beginning at 2 p.m. at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Cemetery, located at 14 Veterans Way, in Fernley, Nev. The public is invited to attend.

Staging for the escort of the veterans will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Alamo Truck Stop, 1950 E. Greg Street, in Sparks, Nevada. The procession will include members of the Nevada Highway Patrol, Washoe County Sheriff's Office as well as police officers from the Sparks and Reno Police Departments. The procession route will head east on I-80 and go down Main Street in Fernley before arriving at the cemetery.

There are many reasons remains are "unclaimed." One may have no surviving family members or be estranged from family. Volunteers with the Nevada Veterans Coalition have been working with the "Missing in America Project" to locate, identify and then inter the unclaimed remains of American veterans. The remains of many who will be buried on Friday have been sitting on a mortuary shelf since the 1980's. This will be the fifth "Missing in America Project" burial held by the Nevada Veterans Coalition.
