Carson Valley Trails Association Hike for Health Day at River Fork Ranch
The Carson Valley Trails Association, in partnership with The Nature Conservancy and the Carson Valley Medical Center, will present its 8th annual Hike for Health Day on Saturday, September 17, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at The Nature Conservancy’s River Fork Ranch, located east of the Town of Genoa at 381 Genoa Lane.
The event is free and open to the public.
Hike for Health Day will offer a variety of easy, guided hikes and emphasize the health benefits of hiking and other outdoor trail activities. A BBQ lunch will be available from 12 to 1:30 p.m. ($5 donation). The Hickr’y Switch band will perform live bluegrass and Americana music from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Participants must register and sign release and waiver forms onsite; parent or guardian signature is required for participants age 17 and under. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to any hike you plan to join. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a hat, sunscreen and water. Dogs are not allowed on the trails at River Fork Ranch.

• Health Benefits of Hiking Walk & Talk with Dr. Scott Kennedy, Family Practice Physician, Carson Valley Medical Center
• Genoa and Mormon Station History with Daniel Wassmund, Mormon Station Park Ranger
• Compass Basics with Jeremy Vlcan, CVTA board member
• Range and Forest Walk with Shane Ryan, Nevada Division of Forestry
10 to 11:30 a.m.
• “Leave No Trace” with Allen Newbury, US Forest Service, Carson Ranger District
• Monarch Butterflies and Western Pond Turtles with Norah Gastelum, CVTA board member
• Carson Valley Watershed Hike with Brenda Hunt, Watershed Program Manager, Carson Water Subconservancy District
11:30 a.m to. 1:30 p.m.
• Live bluegrass and Americana music performed by Hickr’y Switch. The group has performed at a variety of venues and events, including the Bower’s Mansion Bluegrass Festival, as well as opening for Seldom Scene, Carrie Rodriquez, and David Grisman and the Rowan Brothers. All of the band members contribute to a strong vocal presence. The band includes: Mark Johnson playing banjo, harmonica and Cajun accordion; Katie Johnson on guitar and bass; and Mike Suglia playing bass, dobro and guitar. Band member Cory King, who plays the mandolin and banjolin, will be not be performing with the group at this event.
