This is the first of a series of public service announcements filmed to keep the public up to date with the latest information on the COVID-19 pandemic, flu season, and what is happening in Carson City outside COVID related news.

MINDEN, Nev. — The Nevada COVID Task Force notified Douglas County that they are flagged for elevated COVID-19 disease transmission. Douglas County saw a spike in infection rates back in July, but then numbers declined for several months.

CARSON CITY — The City encourages the community to stay informed, practice good hygiene, wear masks and when feasible please stay home.

The City is proactively taking steps to ensure the health and safety of its residents. In response to the Governor’s recent stay at home request, the City will continue to enable staff to work from home in order to limit the amount of personnel in the workplace.

In a controversial open letter to the Douglas County Library Board that has since made national headlines, Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley threatened to withhold emergency services from the library after they proposed to support Black Lives Matter in an agenda item.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, new forms of healthcare technology emerged allowing patients to continue to access care during the crisis. Telehealth skyrocketed in popularity, allowing many people to visit with their provider via a phone call or a video conference appointment.

Douglas County 9-1-1 Emergency Services is pleased to announce another enhancement to our next generation 9-1-1 service.

We have partnered with RapidSOS to bring enhanced 9-1-1 services to the residents and visitors of Douglas and Alpine Counties.

UPDATE: Nevada Department of Corrections Public Information Officer Scott Kelley shared these additional details regarding then incident:

There was a stabbing of a male offender this morning at Warm Springs Correctional Center. Carson City emergency services was contacted via 911 and responded to WSCC at 9:40 am. A medical helicopter arrived, and left at 10:10 a.m. to transport the offender to a local hospital to receive medical care. WSCC's warden was notified by telephone. The incident is under investigation.

CARSON CITY — Dr. Antonina Capurro, Nevada State Dental Health Officer, recently released a multifaceted and comprehensive plan to resume non-emergency dental procedures which has been approved by the Governors’ Medical Advisory Team and adopted as regulation by the Nevada State Board of Dental Examiners.

Sgt. Benjamin Jenkins was killed in the line of duty on March 27, 2020 on US-93 and White Pine county mile marker 106 near Ely. The following is a statement released on behalf of the Jenkins family:

According to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, the Sheriff's Office has slightly changed the way they perform their duties thanks to the shut down, and they are already seeing a change in calls for emergency services. While there has been an increase in "stress related" calls, intoxication-related calls are down and community members have been taking care of each other, said Furlong.

UPDATE: Carson City Health and Human Services clarified one item in the resolution regarding the number of cases. Carson City health officials have identified 1 positive case and the potential exposure of 14 ship passengers who have been repatriated who are being tracked.

A 34-year-old Dayton woman was arrested Saturday by the Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team for suspicion of child abuse causing substantial bodily harm, burglary, grand larceny, possession of meth and heroin and other charges.

RENO — The U.S. Geological Survey has awarded more than $12.5 million to seven universities and a university-governed non-profit to support operation, improvement and expansion of the ShakeAlert earthquake early warning system for the West Coast of the United States.

A 23-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday for suspicion of driving under the influence causing substantial bodily harm, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

Drake Dembke has lost two friends to opioid overdose. One was dropped off by his friends in front of the emergency room, the other was left by the side of the road.
“As a recovering heroin addict myself, I’ve seen what it does,” he said. “It sucks.”

World Hearing Day is March 3 every year, held to help raise awareness on how to prevent deafness and hearing loss and promote ear and hearing care across the world.

In recognition of the day, Carson Valley Medical Center is offering free hearing evaluations Friday, March 1 and Friday, March 8 through its Occupational Health Clinic in Minden at 897 Ironwood Drive.

Approximately 20 percent of Americans, or 48 million, report some degree of hearing loss. At age 65, the numbers grow to 33 percent. Additionally, nearly 15 percent of school-age children have some degree of hearing loss.

A major winter storm will bring blizzard conditions and several feet of snow to Lake Tahoe and Sierra into Thursday night with heavy rain around the Carson City and lower valley regions, according to the National Weather Service.

A new Nissan dealership, Starbucks Coffee store, and more housing developments are among the proposed building projects currently under review by the Carson City Planning Division.

Douglas High School’s athletic department received a pair of orange-clad Automatic External Defibrillator devices from Carson Valley Medical Center Tuesday afternoon.

CVMC primary care provider Jim Gocke, APRN, and CVMC Hospital Foundation board member Nita Schwartz, MD, were on hand to present the devices to Douglas High student athletes and athletic department administration.

UPDATE 5:42PM: Old Highway 395 is now open in both directions after a wildfire closed the highway from Eastlake to Bellevue, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

UPDATE: 5:20PM: Forward progress stopped on Washoe Valley "Berry Fire."

The 8-acre fire is now 30 percent contained according to Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District.

Evacuations are still in place for remaining addresses.

Crews will remain on site overnight "mopping up." Some Carson City Fire Department crews are being released from the scene. The cause is under investigation.

5:00PM: Good progress on the Berry Fire is reported by Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District. Firefighters are working to secure utilities. The evacuation area has been reduced to 8 addresses. The Galena Evacuation Center is now closed.

Old US 395 between Bellevue and Eastlake Drive closed for approximately 1 hour.

Washoe Valley outages have yet to be fixed. Original estimated time of restoration was 5:30PM, however the fire could prolong the restoration.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

CARSON CITY — John Christopherson has been named Deputy Administrator of Operations for the Nevada Division of Forestry, the state's forester and fire warden announced Thursday.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Division of Forestry announced Monday that applications are now being accepted for the Community Forest and Open Space Program competitive grant funding. CFP provides funding for the acquisition of private forest lands for public use. Funds are provided by the U.S. Forest Service.

A 911 phone call to the Carson City Communications Division is a lifeline moment where someone on the other end needs immediate help. The dispatchers on the other end are known as the first, first responders.

Longtime Carson Valley resident and family nurse practitioner Catherine Fuller is the latest addition to the staff of primary care providers at Carson Valley Medical Center.

MINDEN — Douglas County 9-1-1 Emergency Services received re-accreditation in their Emergency Medical Communications program through the International National Academies of Emergency Dispatch, and will remain accredited through April 2021.

Douglas County Emergency Management, and 911 Emergency Services as the lead, in cooperation with the Nevada Quad Counties of Storey, Lyon and Carson City, has received Federal Emergency Management Agency approval and credentials to access the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System.
