School board trustee to speak at Monday's Democratic luncheon
The speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Michael Walker, who has held the District 5 seat on the Carson City School Board for the past eight years. He was named board president in 2020, and in 2024 became board clerk. He has served on several committees, and as a Director on the Nevada Association of School Boards.
Michael Walker is a dedicated educator and leader within the Carson City School District. He was elected to the board in 2016 and has served in various roles, including board member, clerk, vice president, and president. He holds an Ed.S. in school administration, master’s and bachelor’s degrees in Elementary Education from UNR, and an associate’s degree from Truckee Meadows Community College.
Walker’s experience in education is extensive. He taught third grade at Seeliger Elementary for seven years and worked as a school administrator at Carson Middle School and Fritsch Elementary for five years. He also served as an Education Programs Professional in the Nevada Department of Education as the State Coordinator of Education for Homeless Children and Youth and a Title I program manager for two years.
Currently, he is the principal of Sutro Elementary in Dayton and is president of the Board of Directors of Food for Thought, a local non-profit organization that provides meals for impoverished students in Carson City through a backpack and summer foods program. His commitment to education and the community is further evidenced by his recognition as Carson City’s Favorite Teacher in the Nevada Appeal Reader’s Poll while teaching at Seeliger. At this time he serves as clerk of the Carson City School District Board of Trustees, and is running for reelection.
This event is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday, July 1st, and can either be attended in person at Black Bear Diner, inside Max Casino, or online via Zoom. The presentation will begin after all orders have been taken - around 1:30. Those wishing to be on distribution for luncheon Zoom links should contact Rich Dunn at richdunn@aol.com.
