CCAI Courthouse Gallery Exhibition by Karl Schwiesow
The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Humble Vessel, by artist Karl Schwiesow at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery from June 13 – September 11, 2014. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The exhibition is free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open to the public Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm.
Karl Schwiesow creates his sculptures with inspiration from the world around him. His art addresses the idea of permanence through deconstruction and reconstruction of common objects. In Humble Vessel, Schwiesow presents a 22’ sail boat that he has deconstructed [sliced apart] then reconstructed in the gallery. To challenge common and logical assumptions on how the world works, he playfully takes objects apart and reconfigures them. His creative and determined approach to art making has been described as “fearless”.
Mr. Schwiesow was the recipient of a Milliken Millennium Scholarship and received a BFA degree from Sierra Nevada College in 2012. He was awarded 1st place in the Sierra Nevada College Juried Student Show Cyborgs and Dandelions, and the author and coordinator of an outdoor installation exhibit at the 2012 National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts Weather or Not juried exhibit in Seattle Washington.
His work was included in CCAI’s 2012 New Crop invitational group show. His most recent sculpture exhibition, The Red Boat at Sierra Nevada College’s Tahoe Gallery College, was the forerunner for Humble Vessel. Schwiesow also earned the United Bicycle institute’s Professional Bicycle Mechanic Certification in 1997. He grew up in Homer, Alaska, and now lives in Tahoe City, California. He will begin a Master of Fine Arts degree at The University of Montana in the fall.
Artist and writer, Chris Lanier has written An Organized Shipwreck, the essay for Schwiesow’s exhibition. The essay will be available in the gallery and online at arts-initiative.org. Lanier has a background in both traditional and digital media. His animation has screened at Sundance and won awards at several international festivals. He is also an essayist and critic whose art criticism has appeared in a variety of online and print publications. He is an Associate Professor of Digital Art at Sierra Nevada College and lives in Reno, Nevada.
