Lyon and Storey Regional Coalition Meets Thursday
Silver Springs, Nevada - The monthly public meeting of the Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties takes place at the Silver Springs Community Center at 9am on Thursday May 11th, 2017.
Guest speakers during the breakfast meeting include Diane Arvizo, Director of Homebuyer Services with Nevada Rural Housing Authority, and Heather Simola, Real Property Administrator with Nevada Rural Housing Authority.
Diane will describe Home At Last and answer questions about home ownership and home buyer education programs, down payment assistance grants, and the mortgage credit certificate program.
Nevada Rural Housing Authority recently received an award for excellence from the National Association of Local Housing Finance Agencies in the Multifamily category in recognition of the Richards Crossing Supportive Housing project. Heather will describe how Richards Crossing, a new 39-unit affordable housing complex in Carson City, was developed and funded.
Richards Crossing is the first supportive housing project of its kind in northern Nevada. It’s a “one stop shop” with apartments, community support services and an on-the-job training facility.
The apartments are prioritized for Veterans, disabled individuals and those experiencing homelessness, with eight apartments reserved for chronically homeless Veterans.
Other topics during the meeting include updates on the Coalition’s Health Services Hub and school Dental Days; bills at the legislature that will affect Rural Nevada such as AB397 on rural health services; the Behavioral Health Task Force in Lyon County; youth leadership, wellness and job skills training programs such as Stand Tall and Comstock Youth Works; the Coalition’s volunteer-powered food pantries in Dayton, Silver Springs and Yerington; school and community gardens and hoop houses, arts events in public spaces, and new collaborative grant writing projects to help expand the region’s Healthy Food Hub.
The Healthy Communities Coalition is composed of hundreds of community volunteers, a small staff, a dedicated board of directors, and dozens of federal, state, local and tribal group partners working together on a collaborative leadership agenda to increase community vitality in the Lyon and Storey regions.
