Healthy Communities Coalition speakers include Stand Tall and VARN
Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties Thursday, May 9 meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the Silver Springs Community Center at 2945 Ft Churchill St. Guest speakers this month are from VARN and from Stand Tall.
During HCC’s public breakfast meeting, George McNally, Attorney with Volunteer Attorneys for Rural Nevadans (VARN), will describe VARN’s services benefiting rural Nevada. VARN’s Pro Bono Project includes a panel of over 100 private and public volunteer attorneys to provide free legal services to low-income residents in Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Lyon, Storey, Humboldt, Elko, and White Pine counties. VARN also offers the Lawyer in the Lobby program twice a month and various clinics or legal aid fairs throughout the year.
HCC’s Stand Tall youth-led prevention teams will offer a presentation with highlights of their ongoing work on Tobacco 21 policy. They’ll also briefly describe some of their other activities at the legislature and in their schools and communities to promote wellness. The school-based teams use proven strategies to support good nutrition, exercise, and mental health and to prevent the use of tobacco, alcohol, opioids, and other drugs.
What Is the Coalition? Whether its organic school gardens, free pop-up clinics, tobacco and opioid use prevention, science and arts education, job skills training, or suicide prevention, Healthy Communities takes a multi-faceted approach to promoting opportunities for health and wellness with a prevention first approach. Healthy Communities is composed of dozens of local, state, federal and tribal group partners; hundreds of community volunteers; a board of directors and staff, all working together on a common mission to strengthen communities in the Lyon and Storey regions by increasing access to 1)health care; 2) affordable, locally grown food; and 3) sustainable community development opportunities that serve the common good and build local assets and self-reliance.
