This month, the two hour meeting includes a special one-hour presentation on “Domestic Violence and Coordinated Community Response.”

24-hour ride in Carson City cycles in donations of more than $1,000 for Boys and Girls Club

Indoor cyclists burned at least 2,000 calories and rode about 50 miles within the first 20 minutes at Life Cycle Elite Spin Studio's 24-hour community ride Friday.

The event was organized by Jill Larson, who coordinated with the Boys and Girls Club of Northern Nevada and the Healthy Habits Program.

A faculty member at University of Nevada Cooperative Extension has received national recognition for her program addressing nutrition and early literacy in Nevada.

Early Care and Education Specialist YaeBin Kim received the First Place National Award in the human development/family relationships program category for her “Little Books and Little Cooks” nutrition and early literacy program from the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences a few weeks ago at the Association’s annual meeting in Lexington, Ken.

Lyon County to celebrate National Senior Health and Fitness Day

Lyon County Human Services will join an estimated 1,000 local groups Wednesday, May 28 to celebrate the 21st Annual National Senior Health and Fitness Day.

As an official host site, Lyon County Human Services will hold a Senior Health and Fitness Day Fair at Dayton Senior Center, 320 Old Dayton Valley Road in Dayton, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be resistance exercise demonstrations throughout the day, and booths offering information, resources, and services for older adults.

AARP Survey: Health is top concern among 50-plus Nevadans

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the top concern for Nevadans age 50 and older, according to a survey released Thursday.

AARP released its statewide survey that looks at the challenges, concerns and dreams of older adults in the state. The telephone survey was made up of 401 random Nevada residents aged 50 and over was conducted between Jan. 2 and Jan. 31. It has sampling error of plus or minus five percent.

National Birth Defects Prevention Month highlights medication use during pregnancy

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey is joining over 350 members of the National Birth Defects Prevention Network to share the message that women of childbearing age should talk with a health care provider about which medications are safe to take while pregnant.

January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month, and this year’s campaign focuses on medication use before, during, and after pregnancy.

Children don’t consider the amount of vitamins and minerals in food, only the desire to cure hunger. During growing years is the time that they need good nutritional habits. And as we age, eating habits change and many factors, medication, special diets, illness and loneliness get in the way of proper nutrition.
