Capital City Reads: The Motel Life

Capital City Reads is Carson City Library’s annual city-wide book club. It is a program that brings people together through the reading and discussion of a common book.

This event runs in conjunction with National Library Week (April 12-April 18); an annual celebration sponsored by the Friends of the Carson City Library. This year’s theme is “Unlimited Possibilities at your Library.” The 2015 Capital City Reads selection is “The Motel Life” a novel by Willy Vlautin.

“The Motel Life” is Vlautin’s first novel and has been described as an unsettling northern Nevada tale of two down-and-out brothers. The author was born and raised in Reno. A Harper Perennial publication, “The Motel Life” won the Nevada Silver Pen Award in 2007 and made several top ten lists in the United States and abroad. It was one of the few works of fiction to make the Washington Post Media Mix’s Top 25 Books of 2007. Copies of the book are available by contacting Andrea Moore at (775) 887-2244 ext. 1019 or by sending an email to twodlc.ccl@gmail.com.

“The Motel Life” was made into a motion picture in 2012. According to Polsky Films and posted on the Internet Movie Database website, www.imdb.com “…this moody thriller is a searing and profound examination of brotherhood set in the timeless Sierra Nevadan frontier.” The Motion Picture Rating for this film is rated R. Carson City Library will host a book discussion and screening of the film on Thursday, April23, at 6:30 pm in the library digitorium. Nevada scholar Patricia Cooper-Smith will lead the book discussion.

The highlight of Capital City Reads will be a personal appearance by the author, Willy Vlautin, on Friday, April 24, at 6:30 pm in the digitorium. Vlautin will present a reading of his work, as well as sign purchased copies of his books.

In addition to the Capital City Read’s events other programs have been scheduled to highlight National Library Week. The American Library Association has been observing National Library Week since 1958. Each April, libraries across the country promote this celebration as a time to recognize the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. Annual themes have reflected library trends throughout the years and 2015 is no different.

The theme “Unlimited Possibilities @ Your Library” suggests it is becoming easier to realize libraries are more than just books. More and more, they are places of creativity, places to share ideas, use technology, edit a video, or use software to record music. The Carson City Library offers access to the tools and technology essential to the economic and cultural lives of our community.

National Library Week events include:

• Sunday, April 12, 2 pm, Library Digitorium

Music in Poetry, Poetry in Music “Where Words and Music Meet” A program presented by “Primal Mates,” a chamber jazz duo with Chris Lee and Colleen O’Brien.
