UPDATE 8:45 a.m. Saturday: According to Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon, crews are still on scene at the Prison Hill Fire, but the fire is under control. Ground crews are currently taking care of hotspots before any afternoon winds might come up and cause additional flares.
At the height of the fire, 80 to 90 firefighters were on scene, including off-duty personnel who were called in to assist.
Roads near the fire will be reopening soon, said Slamon.
Two helicopters assisted ground crews, and Carson Fire “got a lot of help from our neighbors,” according to Slamon.
The fire burning near Brunswick Canyon is on BLM land is under their jurisdiction, said Slamon, while Carson City crews had to prioritize the Prison Hill fire and its imminent threat to the Buzzy’s Ranch neighborhood.
The Prison Hill fire burned around 200 acres, said Slamon.
Carson Now will continue to update as information becomes available.
UPDATE 7:45 p.m.; Carson River Road is being closed at 5th street. Please stay out of the area to keep the fire accessible to ground crews.
UPDATE 7:01 p.m.: Ground crews are in the hills while helicopters continue to attack the blaze from above.
UPDATE 5:57 p.m.: Rain moved in. Thunder and lightning still occurring.
UPDATE 5:44 p.m.: Voluntary evacuations underway for Gentry.
UPDATE 5:35 p.m.: An additional fire is being fought near Deer Run Road.
UPDATE 5:31 p.m.: Helicopters are assisting above Prison Hill fire.
UPDATE 5:17: A brush fire was reported at 5:17 p.m. east of 1677 Quail Lane in Carson City on a hillside.
The fire, which is reported to be spreading quickly, was caused by a lightening strike.
First Responders are being dispatched to the area.
UPDATE 5:03 p.m.: Carson River Road is being shut down from Fifth Street to Buzzy's Ranch Road. Additionally, no persons are being let into the area including residents.
UPDATE 4:56 p.m.: Fairview Drive is being shut down south of roundabout and north of the state prison.
UPDATE 4:52 p.m.: First responders are on-scene and having trouble accessing top of Prison Hill where fire is located. The flames are moving east-bound and no structures are reported to be ruined at this time.
