With a relentless series of storms pummeling the Sierra, Carson City and surrounding counties through the first half of January, there's the takeaways and lessons learned when preparing for the next round of atmospheric river storms.

The next Carson City School District School Board meeting will take place Tuesday, Jan. 24 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Robert ‘Bob’ Crowell Board Room within the Carson City Community Center.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — The Nevada Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, better known as Nevada WIC, has received one of four nationally grant funded awards from the Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition to test the integration of WIC online ordering using the WICShopper app.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public's help in identifying an attempted kidnapping suspect. On Monday, Jan. 16 at approximately 4:56 p.m. the suspect, who has frequented the location, went into the CVS Pharmacy located at 1980 N. Carson Street.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called early Wednesday evening to vehicle crashes near the intersection of East William Street and Gold Dust Way and Research Way and College Parkway.

Following an assessment of the anticipated overnight weather and road conditions around the University of Nevada, Reno campus and area, a decision has been made to delay the start of nonessential campus operations (campus operations refers to any work performed at the main University campus, office, property, field work or sponsored events in Reno) until 10 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 17.

Wintermester classes will continue as scheduled convening at 10 a.m.

MINDEN — Douglas County has launched a damage assessment tool, where the public can report damage to structures and infrastructure in Douglas County.

As a result of the winter-related conditions, all schools in the Carson City School District will be on a 2-hour delay Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2023. Buses will also operate on a 2-hour delay, so arrival times will be approximately 2-hours later than usual. There will be no Pre-School classes or breakfast served at school.

Carson City residents might know Friends in Service Helping, or “FISH,” for their thrift stores and food bank, but a new project with big, long-terms goals, helping a higher level of client, is finally taking shape on Carson City’s main street. The FISH Student Housing Project — completion planned for Fall 2023.

Western Nevada is host to both resident and migratory birds, allowing locals to view a wide variety of species throughout the year. You may be noticing Bald Eagles beginning to congregate along wetlands and calving fields, and Juncos and Western Meadowlarks exploring the underbrush for seeds. Perhaps you've noticed a flock of Snow Geese migrating south for the winter.

UPDATE: The National Weather Service in Reno has upgraded its Winter Weather Advisory to a Winter Storm Warning through Monday night for Carson City and surrounding counties.

Heavy snow continues around the region bringing an additional snow accumulations of at least 5 inches or more to the greater Reno, Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties. The weather service advises difficult travel conditions will continue through the day, impacting the evening commute before tapering off later Monday evening.

Northern Nevad indie author and illustrator, Shelby deBraga, has released a free Children’s eBook, "Bennie the Bear — Friends of the Forest." deBraga is launching the book for free for 5 days, until Jan. 20, to share with young adventurers ages 2-8 years old and their nature-loving family members.

Adele Mary Whitcome (Dowding) of Carson City, Nevada gained her angel wings and peacefully passed away on January 3rd, 2023. Born on October 2,1930 in the small town of Willows, California to Leslie and Edna Dowding. Adele spent 92 wonderful years spreading love, joy, and sass to any and all around her.

What a wild beginning to 2023! We have already received almost our entire annual precipitation and it’s only January. Heavy wet snow followed torrential rains. Yes, we need the moisture to fill reservoirs, lakes and recharge ground water. No, we didn’t need it all in a couple of weeks.

Participants in Nevada’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will stop receiving extra food assistance dollars provided to ease the effects of the pandemic after March, even though President Joe Biden this week extended the federal public health emergency through April.

Employees at the Reno Veterans Affairs Medical Center held a rally on Friday over staffing shortages. The American Federation of Government Employees has called the shortages "severe" and says it's not just happening here — but all across the nation.
