Carson City area weather: Travel impacts possible with arriving storms
The stormy winter weather will continue overnight into Monday and Tuesday as the next system heads into the Sierra and Carson City area causing potential travel impacts for the region, according to the National weather Service.
For the lower valleys, weather models indicate the brunt of the system will be between I-80 to south of Highway 50 with the potential for several inches of snow by Monday morning. NWS forecasters say high end snow scenarios for western Nevada show a 10 percent chance of 4 or more inches before diminishing Monday evening with a few lingering showers possible across the Sierra and western Nevada until Tuesday morning.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 10 p.m. Monday for the greater Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley areas as well as Lyon and Storey counties. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Lake Tahoe and Sierra, also until 10 p.m.
Lake Tahoe area
For Lake Tahoe and Sierra, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday with snow accumulations of 8 to 18 inches in the Lake Tahoe Basin and 1 to 3 feet above 7,000 feet. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph in the lower elevation and up near 80 mph across Sierra ridgetops, according to the weather service.
Conditions are expected to deteriorate overnight into Monday morning, making travel difficult with likely chain controls. The weather service advises to avoid travel in the Sierra if possible. The latest road conditions can be found calling 511 or going to NVroads.com.
Tuesday and beyond
Tuesday and early Wednesday may see some relief in between systems. Looking ahead for the lower valleys, a slider type system will be possible Wednesday night into Thursday morning that could lead to travel impacts for the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes. After this system passes, a quieter pattern is looking increasingly likely, forecasters said.
