GARDNERVILLE, Nev. — The man who shot a Douglas County sergeant during a traffic stop last year was sentenced to prison Monday afternoon.

Carson City Health and Human Services is reporting 70 new COVID-19 cases and 53 recoveries in the Quad County region from Saturday, April 10 to Monday, April 12, 2021.

The Carson City Nuisance Task Force, made up of Carson City Department heads and health officials conducted an inspection Monday of the Frontier Motel on North Carson Street and immediately began the process of condemning multiple rooms at the motel, having determined they are unsafe for human occupancy.

Caltrans crews are working on all Sierra mountain passes in order to have them all open by Memorial Day. For the better part of a year now, live music in public venues has been long sought after as COVID-19 restrictions have kept people from gathering together.

CARSON CITY — Overnight lane closures will take place at multiple locations in Douglas County on Sunday, April 11 as the Nevada Department of Transportation installs roadway sensors.

Lavon, an Administrative Specialist, upon the receiving of her award said “I have no need for a web cam or microphone on my computer; at a recent virtual staff meeting, my speakers experienced a case of the hiccups, and I lost the sound, so off to a co-worker’s office I went observing social distancing rules and sitting on the far side of the office just to listen to the staff meeting.”

On April 15, 2021 at the Board of County Commissioner’s Meeting, the Board will review a plan to transition from State control of COVID response and recovery to local control. If approved, the plan, titled the Douglas County COVID-19 Recovery Plan, will be submitted to the State COVID-19 Task Force in accordance with the Nevada Roadmap to Recovery Transition Plan.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisor’s meeting will take place Thursday, April 15 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Robert ‘Bob’ Crowell Board Room in the Carson City Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

Items up for discussion include affordable housing, potential closure of a motel, new sidewalks for Colorado St., an appeal from the recently-closed asphalt plant, and more.

Carson City Elks Lodge #2177 installed their officer corps on April 3. Al Bye, past State President was on hand to help with the installation of officers. Jim Smolenski, who was the Exalted Ruler, relinquished the reigns to Martha Reynolds, the new lodge’s incoming Exalted Ruler.

The Sierra-Tahoe Auxiliary Unit #137 of the Fleet Reserve Association has historically provided an Easter Egg Hunt for the children at the USMC Winter Warfare base in Bridgeport, Calif.

This year due to the pandemic the Branch/Unit was unable to actually be at the housing complex but still were able to stuff 800 eggs filled with small toys, stickers, and candy, provide small stuffed animals and yoyos, and toys too large to fit in an egg and deliver them to a base community staff member (Jessie).

Friday marks the do-or-die moment for hundreds of legislative proposals — bills must pass out of their first committee unless they have a special exemption.

Lawmakers began Friday by holding marathon committee meetings throughout the day on Friday, working to process backlogged bills or cut last-minute deals on controversial legislation.

On April 9th, a state-owned vehicle was reported stolen from the Reno area. Agencies throughout the region were alerted to be watchful for the vehicle.

At approximately 3 p.m., a Carson City Deputy on routine patrol witnessed a vehicle matching the reported stolen vehicle passing through the downtown city corridor at an estimated 70 miles per hour.

When the Deputy turned his vehicle to stop the car the driver attempted to escape by speeding into a congested neighborhood with several schools letting out at the time.

We are reporting 13 new cases and 30 additional recoveries of COVID-19 in the Quad-County Region. This brings the total number of cases to 12,053, with 11,454 recoveries and 222 deaths; 377 cases remain active.

UPDATE 4:10 p.m.: According to Carson City School District Public Information Officer Dan Davis, the schools were not put on lockdown because the children had been released for the day at 3:15 p.m., and the sheriff's office called at 3:20 p.m. after students were already out of the building. However, teachers were notified and were asked to be cautious.

A car chase that began in the area of Highway 50 and Crane and ended in the 700 block of 5th street led to Bordewich Bray Elementary and Fremont Elementary School being briefly placed on lockdown.

While the 3rd Street Parking Lot, which has been the Carson City’s Farmers Market’s home for years, gets a facelift this season, the Farmers Market will be temporarily moving to a new home.

An injury accident was reported at 1:45 p.m. Friday afternoon on Curry Street.

The accident involved two vehicles which are blocking traffic.

Motorists should use alternate routes.

First responders are enroute to the scene.

The Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department will be coordinating the annual Fuel Reduction Program using sheep starting next week. This project is also in coordination with the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Nevada Division of State Lands, the Washoe Tribe and Carson Community Council and private property owners.

On April 3rd, Carson City Elks Lodge No. 2177 raised $440 for the Elks State Major Project.

Members donated to this project to watch the outgoing Exalted Ruler, Jim Smolenski, get dunked with ice.

The Carson City Board of Supervisor’s will be discussing whether or not to issue an order to the Frontier Motel’s business owner for a show cause hearing which could lead to a revocation of its owner’s business license. The city has noted that the motel is a haven for drug use, physical abuse, and numerous health concerns.

Traffic going to and from the south shore over US50 is cut off Friday morning due to a rock slide.

At 5:46 a.m. the report of a slide was received by the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

A Toyota 4runner collided into the boulders after the slide occurred. No injuries were reported.

There is no estimated time of opening and no detour. Road crews are going to look at opening Johnson Pass Road but that is still covered in snow and ice. Travelers will have to use north shore routes or SR89/88.

Expect long delay.

Featured speaker at Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon will be Elizabeth Haase MD, Medical Director of Behavioral Health at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center. A psychiatrist with decades in private practice, Dr. Haase also serves as part of the voluntary faculty at the University of Nevada-Reno School of Medicine. The focus of her remarks at the tele-luncheon will be the mental health impacts of climate change.

The Carson City School District would like to reassure employees there has not been a data breach or leak of information within the school district. There is, however, since the start of the pandemic last year, an ongoing issue of false unemployment claims being filed among numerous employers throughout the state of Nevada and across the nation. This is not a circumstance specifically isolated to the Carson City School District. It appears no employer, business, industry or public agency has been spared.
