The East Fork Fire burning south of Gardnerville in Alpine County was at 1,136 acres and 45 percent contained as of Monday evening, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

Fire destroyed a Tiger Drive mobile home early Monday morning, with three adults and two dogs able to get out safely, according to a Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief.

On Christmas Eve of 50 years ago, 17 year old Juliane Diller was seated comfortably next to her mother aboard an 86-passenger turboprop bound for Pucallpa, Peru, when they flew into a thunderstorm. The East Fork Fire burning 15 miles south of Gardnerville in the Carson Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is 30 percent contained as of Sunday evening, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

Carson City Fire Department crews working the Prison Hill Fire will spend Sunday reinforcing control lines and extinguishing any hot spots. The fire remains at 171 acres burned and 90 percent contained. The goal is 100 containment Sunday, according to CCFD.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies responded Sunday morning to a vehicle rollover on South Carson Street across from Appion Way.

Rolling message board signs recently seen on King and Mountain streets warning motorists to slow down for 15 mph school zones have led to confusion about whether or not these zones are being enforced differently this summer than they have been in previous years.

Thousands of white polystyrene (also known as Styrofoam) balls, each the size of a fish egg, was the last thing Alison Toy and her husband expected to see blanketing the beach at Moon Dune on Tahoe’s north shore during an evening walk.

Toy quickly spotted the source of the pollution – a butterfly-shaped plush float toy with a burst seam – floating amid the trash on Tahoe’s blue waters.

UPDATE 1:03 p.m.: As of 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon the fire is still burning but it is being managed by ground crews. Large flames can still be seen. A helicopter returned to the scene at 1:07 p.m.

On Friday just before 5 p.m., a thunderstorm moved into the valley, causing several dry lightning strikes to make contact throughout Carson City, leading to multiple brush fires in a short period of time.

The worst of which, which was deemed as high-priority by fire crews, was the fire which began at Prison Hill due to a lightning strike, which made contact at the top of the mountain and quickly began alighting on both sides.

Amidst an evening of brush fires in Carson City Friday night another fire appears to be burning in the hills west of Washoe Valley near Slide Mountain.

Updates to follow. Responders are on scene.

UPDATE 8:45 a.m. Saturday: According to Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon, crews are still on scene at the Prison Hill Fire, but the fire is under control. Ground crews are currently taking care of hotspots before any afternoon winds might come up and cause additional flares.

At the height of the fire, 80 to 90 firefighters were on scene, including off-duty personnel who were called in to assist.

Roads near the fire will be reopening soon, said Slamon.

Two helicopters assisted ground crews, and Carson Fire “got a lot of help from our neighbors,” according to Slamon.

The fire burning near Brunswick Canyon is on BLM land is under their jurisdiction, said Slamon, while Carson City crews had to prioritize the Prison Hill fire and its imminent threat to the Buzzy’s Ranch neighborhood.

The Prison Hill fire burned around 200 acres, said Slamon.

Carson Now will continue to update as information becomes available.

UPDATE 7:45 p.m.; Carson River Road is being closed at 5th street. Please stay out of the area to keep the fire accessible to ground crews.

UPDATE 7:01 p.m.: Ground crews are in the hills while helicopters continue to attack the blaze from above.

UPDATE 5:57 p.m.: Rain moved in. Thunder and lightning still occurring.

UPDATE 5:44 p.m.: Voluntary evacuations underway for Gentry.

UPDATE 5:35 p.m.: An additional fire is being fought near Deer Run Road.

UPDATE 5:31 p.m.: Helicopters are assisting above Prison Hill fire.

UPDATE 5:17: A brush fire was reported at 5:17 p.m. east of 1677 Quail Lane in Carson City on a hillside.
The fire, which is reported to be spreading quickly, was caused by a lightening strike.
First Responders are being dispatched to the area.

UPDATE 5:03 p.m.: Carson River Road is being shut down from Fifth Street to Buzzy's Ranch Road. Additionally, no persons are being let into the area including residents.

UPDATE 4:56 p.m.: Fairview Drive is being shut down south of roundabout and north of the state prison.

UPDATE 4:52 p.m.: First responders are on-scene and having trouble accessing top of Prison Hill where fire is located. The flames are moving east-bound and no structures are reported to be ruined at this time.

Just after 4:45 p.m. a brush fire was reported on Prison Hill in Carson City.

First responders are enroute to Prison Hill. It’s being reported as burning at the top of the mountain.

Firefighters are working to contain a large brush fire which was caused by lightning located in Cottonwood Canyon on the Carson Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest 15 miles south of Gardnerville.

A non-injury crash was reported at 1:38 p.m. at the intersection of Robinson and Stewart Friday afternoon.

The crash involves two vehicles.

First responders are currently enroute to the scene.

Motorists should avoid the area or use alternate routes if possible.

With many people expected to enjoy a long Independence Day weekend, the Nevada Division of Emergency Management (DEM) and the United States Department of Agriculture officials have a few reminders for those who choose to celebrate the holiday within National Forest Service (NFS) lands.

Due to excessive heat, exceptional drought conditions and continuing extreme fire danger, fireworks pose wildfire risk when they are in the wrong hands, according to a DEM press release. Nevadans and visitors are asked to refrain from using consumer fireworks when celebrating.

A three vehicle crash with injury was reported just before 12:30 p.m. south of Bodine’s Casino on Carson Street.

One individual complained of neck pain.

Imagine, one night your family cat goes outside and is spooked and runs off. You search day and night for him, posting fliers, offering rewards, contacting every lost and found page and humane society in the area. Just when you give up hope, you learn that your cat is safe and sound — only, it turns out, they're being kept at someone else's house. When you contact animal control and the sheriff's office to try and have your pet returned, they tell you its not within their jurisdiction, without offering exactly whose jurisdiction it falls to.

This has been the situation for Carson City resident Crystal Blackeye for nearly a year after her beloved pet cat, Anubis, went missing last October.

After the fireworks show in Carson City was cancelled last year due to COVID-19, most capital city residents are excited for this Fourth of July’s celebrations. But there is one group who is distinctly against the celebrations, and those are our family pets.

The Independence Day holiday weekend arrives around Carson City, western Nevada and Lake Tahoe with continued hot weather in the valleys and daily chances for thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Nestled on the east side of the Sierra Nevada, Carson City is offering a mix of events, music festivals and holiday weekend celebrations, all pairing seamlessly with activities available throughout the region.

The Lyon County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to pass a proclamation naming Lyon County a “Constitutional County,” with a portion of the proposed language including Sheriff Frank Hunewill and his association with a “Constitutional Sheriffs” organization removed at the request of the sheriff.

Carson City Health and Human Services is reporting for the week of June 24 through June 30, 2021 that there are 75 new COVID-19 cases and 75 additional recoveries in the Quad County region.

Surrounded by his loving family, James Y. Robertson passed peacefully on June 13, 2021. Jim was born to Mr. and Mrs. Anthon and Lucille Robertson in Cleveland, Ohio on May 29, 1926. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Bernice, and beloved wife of 66 years, Nancylee Masters Robertson. He is survived by his children, Kent and Rosanna Robertson, Bruce and Gayle Robertson, and Lynn and Gary Lyon, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
