A national workshop that trains people to assist families living in poverty in becoming self-supporting will be hosted by Capital City Circles Tuesday-Friday, Oct. 22-25 at Western Nevada College in Carson City.

The National Circles Campaign Hands-On Training workshop will include education for coordinators and coaches from around the country. They will meet in small training groups, and there will be a poverty simulation workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 23.

A 20-year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday, Oct. 18, 12:52 a.m. at the intersection of College Parkway and Sherman. He faces misdemeanor charges of contempt of court warrant, minor consuming alcohol and possession of marijuana.

According to the arrest report, officers with the Special Enforcement Team were patrolling northbound on College Parkway when a vehicle was seen stopped with its hazard lights on.

The Carson CIty Sheriff's Office will conduct saturation patrols in the Carson City area on Friday, Oct. 25 ahead of Saturday's Nevada Day parade.

In addition to focusing on impaired drivers, the patrols will also be looking for driving and registration violations.

These patrols are designed to help keep our roadways safe from impaired and unsafe drivers, said Sgt. Scott McDaniel of the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

Children's book writer Elizabeth "Liz" Ann Patterson is this week's guest on Women to Women Nevada.

Patterson, a Carson City Support Services Specialist, has penned a series of six children's fantasy and adventure books "Bonners Fairy." The series is about teenage twins, Haley and Henry Miles, who discover a secret world of dark and light forces hidden in a portal on their father's estate. Go here for the official website.

A 36-year-old Carson City woman faces misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence and child endangerment after allegedly leaving her children, an 8-month-old and 5-year-old, home alone while she went out drinking.

The woman was arrested at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of 5th and Fairview.

It isn’t that I was consciously aware of not liking myself during a period of my adolescence. I was simply angry, really angry. And I didn’t know what to do about it. “It” was several things actually. I turned into a tall skinny kid as I entered adolescence and got teased about being so skinny by peers, parents and others which made me terribly self-conscious. Then, my parents divorced when I was 14 which shook me to the core.

In August, Western Nevada College received recognition for its work with veterans, applauded at a national conference attended by President Barack Obama. Just two months later, WNC has continued its multi-faceted support of veterans as they make the transition from serving their country to a life focused on academics and career preparation.

The student veterans group of WNC will celebrate the opening of the Western Nevada College Student Veterans Resource Center on Thursday, Oct. 31, 1-3 p.m., at the Carson City campus.
