The Carson City School District and Carson City Sheriff’s Office are partnering together to prevent substance abuse by celebrating National Red Ribbon Campaign the dates of October 21-31, 2013.

The Red Ribbon Campaign was started by the family of fallen D.E.A. Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena after he died in the line of duty. This national event was later recognized by the United States Congress and has since become the nation’s largest substance abuse prevention awareness campaign with an estimated 80 million Americans participating annually.

A 41-year-old man with an extensive criminal history in Carson City was arrested Wednesday and faces felony charges of being a felon in possession of a loaded weapon, possession of methamphetamine and prescription drugs. A 25-year-old female passenger with him faces two misdemeanor charges.

Franklin Trevino was stopped for speeding 11:18 p.m. in the area of Saliman and 5th Street. According to the arrest report, officers patrolling paced the Chevy sedan Trevino was driving doing 35 in a 25 mph zone. The vehicle also crossed over and straddled the yellow line for nearly one city block.

I would like to plead to our neighbors in Carson City to not have awful decorations up for Halloween. Halloween is a great time for fun and a bit of a scare, but not for rated R front yards.

It’s fun to decorate, but sometimes we kids feel like people decorate a little too much on Halloween. I go to school at Mark Twain Elementary. There is a house practically right in front of the school, and everyone sees it’s awful decorations, every morning while going to school.

Justin Carrigan was sentenced Monday to a minimum of five and maximum of 15 years in the Nevada Department of Corrections prison after a jury in September found him guilty of child neglect with substantial bodily after a 3-year-old suffered brain damage under his care.

This is the second time a jury convicted and Judge James T. Russell sentenced Carrigan of this crime. On September 29, 2011, a jury found Carrigan guilty of child neglect with substantial bodily harm but acquitted him of child abuse with substantial bodily harm.

After 18 months of planning, a new high tech LED welcoming sign stationed in front of the Carson City Community Center was unveiled Wednesday.

The $100,000 message board not only gives a refreshing welcome as motorists drive along William Street, but provides key information about events and happenings throughout Carson City.

Treat or treating in Carson City will be held on Halloween night, Thursday, Oct. 31. Just like it is celebrated throughout the country.

If you're a Carson City resident, the question as to when Beggar's Night falls on isn't a dumb one to wonder or ask since wrenches have been thrown into the mix every few years due to Nevada Day festivities.

Because Nevada Day sometimes falls on Oct. 31, there have been instances where the annual trick or treating ritual in Carson City has been moved up or down the calendar.

UPDATE: Nevada Department of Wildlife personnel captured a large male black bear Wednesday morning behind the Reinhold Sadler House on Mountain Street, a couple of blocks from the Governor's Mansion.

The bear was hit with one tranquilizer dart and then climbed a tree, where it stayed for 30-40 minutes, until it was driven down with pepper spray and hit with a second dart, in front of several onlookers.

The man accused of pulling a gun and threatening employees at Carson City’s Olive Garden on July 21 pleaded not guilty Tuesday.
Carson District Judge James Wilson set an April 7 trial for David Paul Lane.

UPDATE: A Carson City teenage girl was the victim in a pedestrian accident at Roop and Evalyn streets near Governor's Field early Tuesday night, authorities said. The girl, believed to be 16 or 17, was flown by Care Flight to Renown Medical Center in Reno. Her condition is unknown.
