Bear activity around Carson City continues to keep Nevada wildlife managers busy. A 350-pound male black bear was caught early Tuesday morning in west Carson City.

The bear had never been handled before and was expected to be released sometime Wednesday morning, said Nevada Department of Wildlife black bear biologist Carl Lackey.

A Carson City man was arrested early Tuesday on two felony warrants. Jordan Burkhart, 24, taken into custody in the 1700 block of Brown Street at 1:19 a.m.

According to the arrest report, one felony warrant was issued out of Washoe District Court for a charge of possession of stolen property. The second warrant, a priority 5, was issued out of parole and probation. He was taken into custody without incident. He is being held without bail awaiting extradition.

Ty Warner, creator of Beanie Babies, has agreed to pay a $53,000,000 penalty after being accused of federal income tax evasion for failing to report millions of income he earned in a foreign bank account.

It seems he had a secret offshore bank account at UBS starting in 1996. UBS is a Switzerland based financial services company that as part of a 2009 agreement has provided IRS with the identities of certain customers. Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) and other overseas banks hid foreign accounts from the IRS.

The Carson City Community Center is getting new signage thanks to the efforts of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce and other partners that have worked with the city to obtain much need modern signage in front of the Community Center.

As most of the city private businesses have gone to LED signage, the 50-year old sign in front of the Community Center has remained a relic. Staff had to use a ladder to change the message. Beginning Wednesday, all it will take is a computer programmer to change the messages.

The city’s website does not recap how the board voted after each meeting. To learn how I vote on an item, you must watch or attend the meeting. I try to explain and ask questions before each vote so the public can better understand the process for my decision.

Since I took office, I have pulled many Consent Agenda items that will cost tax payers money for discussion prior to any approval. I believe not asking questions and not having public discussion about spending taxpayer money is wrong.

A mobile home received significant damage on Monday after a structure fire in the area of Poole Way near Lompa Lane in Carson City. No one was home at the time.

Children in an adjacent home told a Carson City sheriff's deputy that the mobile was occupied by their grandmother and that she was not home at the time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Northern Nevadans diagnosed with cancer, as well as families, friends, caregivers and healthcare providers, are invited to the Sierra Nevada Cancer Center office in Carson City (1460 South Curry Street, Suite 100) on Saturday, Nov. 2, from noon to 4 p.m., to share their cancer journeys through art and photography, as part of Lilly Oncology on Canvas: Expressions of a Cancer Journey.

SNCC will provide canvases, brushes, paint and other art supplies, as well as beverages, refreshments, a silent auction and raffle. Artists are free to express themselves however they like.

Nevada Day weekend is a lot of things — fun, freaky, flavorful, festive and especially affordable. The RSVP Carson City statehood weekend carnival, held annually at Mills Park, is one of Nevada Day's highlights, with plenty of thrills, chills, food, games and amusement park rides.

Carson City Toyota Scion will once again host Family Night at the Carnival on Thursday, Oct. 24 from 5 to 10 p.m. All rides are $1. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket booths or at Carson City Toyota Scion.

A Zephyr Cove man was arrested Sunday and faces a felony charge of third offense driving under the influence after being stopped by Carson City sheriff's patrol officers.

Christopher James Thompson, 33, was arrested in the 2500 block of South Carson Street at 2:50 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 20. Thompson was stopped for failure to maintain a single lane of traffic, the arrest report states.
