In a 4 to 1 decision the Lyon County Board of Commissioners on Thursday approved a Master Plan Amendment and zone change sought by Comstock Mining.

Commissioners took testimony 4.5 hours of testimony in regards to Comstock Mining’s application for a Master Plan Amendment and Zone Change. The chambers and hallways filled with about 250 residents.

Nevada’s third black bear hunting season is in the books. The Department of Wildlife says 14 bears were killed by hunters, with the last one killed on Nov. 23.

The New Year has begun, and quite surprisingly the past year has gone by extremely fast. Unsurprisingly, rarely did anything surprise me during my first year as a Supervisor. Granted there are moments when one believes he/she is making the right and prudent decision, but I did learn that regardless of how one votes, there will always be consequences.

What is most popular in the public opinion could and often does influence and create pressure for city staff to revitalize their position on the issues of the day, and then they may or may not make an agenda item for that subject matter.

The Nevada Highway Patrol's preliminary enforcement activity numbers for New Year’s Eve, which were captured between 7:00 pm last evening through 5:00 am this morning, appear to be slightly lower than those reported by our agency one year ago.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reports 24 arrests during the New Year’s Eve celebration in the casino core area of Stateline at Lake Tahoe.

The celebratory crowd seemed no larger than in past years. U.S. Highway 50 was closed to vehicle traffic at about 11:40 p.m. for public safety reasons. The celebrants were allowed to flow into the roadway as they celebrated the coming of the New Year.

A Carson City man was arrested early New Year's morning and faces a felony charge of drug possession with intent to sell after officers recovered more than an ounce of marijuana and a scale to weigh it with the word "work" taped to it.

Paul John Bekakis, 29, was arrested at 3:25 a.m. near Sixth and Carson streets and was booked into Carson City jail on the drug charge. According to the arrest report, officers did a traffic stop suspecting the driver was under the influence. Officers could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the car.

Carson City Ward 2 Supervisor Brad Bonkowski will hold his monthly “Breakfast with Brad” on Friday, January 3 at 7:30 am at the Cracker Box restaurant. Any Carson City resident is invited to stop in.

The monthly meetings help Bonkowski get input on important issues in an informal setting.

The Storey County School District Director of Transportation has become the first in the nation to take the pro-active step to hold interactive, scenario-based attack countermeasure training for school bus drivers. The first training takes place this Friday, Jan. 3 in Virginia City.

Most importantly, remember that if you do make any resolutions, be sure to follow through with what you resolve to do in this new year. Resolutions are easy to make, but sometimes hard to accomplish.
