As soon as the snow started to fly in Hope Valley, David Beck had the feeling that the short-lived "retirement" lifestyle he had been tolerating was going to be over very soon if he could have his way. He had the feeling that all he needed was to recover a little bit from his new knee replacement, and soon he could be out again mushing behind a full set of huskies on the snowy trails of Hope Valley.

Residents who are interested in serving on the Carson City Cultural Commission, which serves as the official advisor to the Carson City Board of Supervisors on matters related to the cultural life of the community, are encouraged to apply for a "Citizen-at-Large" open seat. Applications are being accept now though Feb. 7.

The Lyon County Board of Commissioners on Monday selected Joe Mortensen to serve as chairman of the board and Ray Fierro to remain as the vice chairman.
The Board of Commissioners also made appointments to the various committees, commissions and boards.

Alcohol is suspected as a factor in a fatal crash Monday night on Highway 395 three miles south of Gardnerville in Douglas County that killed a 31-year-old Carson City man, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.
The crash was reported at 10:05 p.m. The preliminary crash investigation details a blue 1995 Ford 4-door sedan, driven by the Carson City man, was pulling out from the driveway of the 7-Eleven store near Riverview Drive and Highway 395, said NHP Trooper Chuck Allen.

Carson Now is proud to begin its third year of being a host to Western Nevada College Baseball broadcasts. Western Nevada Baseball is now widely known as a national power across the USA. In 2012, Carson Now brought you the exciting season that saw the Wildcats baseball program make it to their third JUCO World Series appearance. This year, the Wildcats will have a strong team that is anxious at retaking that trip to Grand Junction, Colorado.

Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes was among four non-voting members appointed Monday by Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval to the State Board of Education. Two voting members were also appointed — Stavan Corbett of Clark County and Freeman Holbrook of Washoe County.
“Today’s appointments are the next steps in reforming the governance of K-12 education in our state, a process I began during the 2011 Legislative session,” Gov. Sandoval said. “Working to deliver the best education to our state’s children must be our highest priority.”

Sierra Nevada College professors and editors evaluated over 500 submissions to choose the top winners for the 2012 High School Writing Contest, a national competition that produced exceptional stories, poems and creative nonfiction from high school juniors and seniors.
“The level of talent was extraordinary, making it tough for the judges,” said June Saraceno, English Department chair at Sierra Nevada College, a four-year private college in Incline Village, Nev.

RSVP will be taken through 5 p.m. today (Monday) for a Town Hall meeting featuring Congressman Mark Amodei.
The Congressman will speak Wednesday, Jan. 9, 8:30 a.m. at the Carson Nugget Ballroom. Admittance is free and includes a continental breakfast but the RSVP is required.
The Town Hall meeting is being done in cooperation with the Carson City Chamber of Commerce, Carson Nugget and Northern Nevada Development Authority.
