Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell will address members of the Carson City Chamber and the community at the forthcoming State of the City address scheduled at the Gold Dust West on Tuesday, Jan. 15.

Crowell will address the issues facing the city as we go forth into a very tenuous 2013.

Nevada's gaming figures for November show overall casino "win" down 11.08 percent, with South Shore Lake Tahoe casinos at Stateline performing the best, the Nevada Gaming Control Board reports today.

November figures for South Shore Lake Tahoe casinos show the largest spike statewide in earnings or "win" at 26.63 percent over November 2011 profits, according to the board. South Lake Tahoe casinos took in $17,734,866 in November 2012 compared to $14,005,506 in 2011.

The Mayor of Carson City was the guest at this week's meeting of the Carson City Men's Club. Per prior agreement he did not give a prepared speech, and after a glowing introduction that gave a brief highlight of his impressive history of accomplishments, he fielded questions from his audience.

For the first time since 1996 and only the eighth time in history, Cooperstown will not be welcoming anybody to the hallowed ground of the Baseball Hall of Fame, and we could be seeing a lot more years like this to come unfortunately. The 2013 ballot saw many newcomer names that were superstars in their playing days.

A 31-year-old Carson City man, Jaron W. Malone, has been identified as the victim in a two-vehicle crash Monday on Highway 395 at Riverview Drive south of Gardnerville in Douglas County, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

One position on the Carson City Planning Commission is open and applications are being sought now through Feb. 7 by the Board of Supervisors.

The commission oversees all matters related to Carson City's planning and zoning, land use and growth management. Meetings are the last Wednesday of every month at 5 p.m. at the Community Center, Sierra Room. Applicants must be willing to serve 12 to 16 hours a month. The seat is for a term that will expire in June 2014.

UPDATE: Carson City authorities used tear gas to detain a man dressed in a black sweater who had barricaded himself inside a home near Silver Sage and Roventini Way.

John Vallerio, 22, was taken into custody at around 8:10 p.m. after a SWAT used tear gas to smoke him out of the house he had been holed up in for more than three hours, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. Vallerio had escaped authorities at 4:39 p.m. after he was about to be served arrest warrants from the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

Carson City fire crews knocked down a fire Tuesday night that produced heavy smoke inside the fungus-based pharmaceutical company Aloha Medicinals in the 2300 block of Arrowhead Drive.

Damage was confined to a dust collection system, which caught fire when sawdust-like material ignited during a mill and grind operation, said Carson City Battalion Chief Eric Bero.

The fire was reported as an alarm at 5:35 p.m. and crews had flames knocked down 5:47p.m., with the situation reported under control at 6:36 p.m.
