More than 275 traffic enforcement stops were made by Nevada Highway Patrol troopers on Northern Nevada highways in a 10-hour period from 7 pm Monday until 5 am Tuesday morning.
Only seven motorists, or roughly three percent, stopped during that timeframe were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Many of those motorists stopped were designated drivers for passengers riding in the vehicle who were celebrating the New Year and had already consumed alcohol.

Fans of the late Ed Carlson, known as "The Waver" to Northern Nevadans, will pay tribute to his life and the many lives he touched at noon today at Reno City Plaza for a short memorial service, according to a news release.
Following the service attendees will then walk one mile south on South Virginia Street while waving to oncoming traffic as The Waver did for some many years before returning to City Plaza.

A Carson City man faces felony robbery and grand larceny charges after allegedly attacking a man outside of a casino, grabbing his keys and stealing a Ford Bronco, crashing it into a fence all the while being naked.
Alex Xavier Anguiano, 20, was arrested around 6 a.m. Sunday in the 3300 block of Highway 50.

Leadership at the state's highest court will change Jan. 5 when Chief Justice Michael A. Cherry ends his term and Justice Kristina Pickering begins the administrative role of Chief Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court.
Pickering will represent Nevada’s courts at the 2013 Nevada Legislature and will give the State of the Judiciary address to lawmakers early in the session. She will serve as Chief Justice until January 2014.

About 400 Nevada guardsmen have begun training at various locations on and off the Las Vegas Strip on New Year's Eve this year for the 12th annual Vigilant Sentinel training exercise. The training is also being done in conjunction with the Las Vegas Metro Police. More than half of the guardsmen participating are from Northern Nevada. About 300,000 people are expected to party on the Las Vegas Strip on Monday, according to Las Vegas Metro Police.

WASHINGTON — Nevada Sen. Dean Heller looks at this new year as a fresh start — to the extent that anyone actually can have one in a place like the Senate when you’ve already been hanging around for a year and a half.
“I want it to feel like a fresh start, but it really hasn’t because we have so many issues,” Heller said during an interview this month in his office. “It just doesn’t slow down. So it’s kind of hard to take that deep breath you think you deserve after such a campaign.”

Authorities are investigating the death of a Washoe Valley man after being dispatched early Saturday morning to a home where there had been a report of some kind of unknown trouble.
The Washoe County Sheriff's Office Special Operations and Investigations Division reports the deceased man was found inside a home in the 3900 block of Pershing Lane in Washoe Valley, said Deputy Armando Avina in a news release. The death has been called "suspicious" by Washoe County authorities. No other details have been made available.

More snow is on the way for Carson City, Dayton and much of Western Nevada, prompting the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a Winter Weather Advisory through 10 a.m. Sunday.
Snow will begin tonight (Saturday) and last through Sunday morning with between 1 to 4 inches expected. Well below freezing cold air will be mixed in with the snow to make make for icy conditions along Highways 50, 395 and 95, according to the weather service.

A Carson City man with a felony fugitive from justice warrant out of California was arrested in the 500 block of Bath Street Dec. 27 at 11:34 p.m.
Jonathan Roland Dionne, 24, was being held without bail from a warrant issued out of Solano County, Calif., on charges of cruelty to a child causing possibility of injury or death, driving under the influence and failure to comply with terms under probation.
