Wildcats pick up win against Astros

For a team that's been struggling, this went about as well as could be.
The Western Nevada College baseball team rolled to a 10-2 win over the Reno Astros semipro team on Tuesday at John L. Harvey Field. The Wildcats were able to schedule the game to make up for a rained out game early in the season and the contest couldn't have come at a better time for a club that has lost six of its last games.

Bighorns set for another summer season

The Nevada Bighorns summer collegiate baseball team is gearing up for another season in which the Carson City-based club will again bring high level play to the area.
 
The season is less than a month away with opening day set for Saturday, May 29. The Bighorns will host the San Francisco Seals at 5 p.m. at John L. Harvey Field. The Bighorns will then play a doubleheader against the Seals, beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 30, at John L. Harvey Field.

Parra, Brewer in position to qualify for regional tournament ... there's only one snag

Carson High boys golf teammates Mitch Parra and Niko Brewer will both be in position to earn Northern 4A Regional Tournament qualifying berths when they tee off in their final regular match on Wednesday at ArrowCreek Country Club in Reno.

WildCats girls softball program looks to put players on the field

Wildcats lose twice against Salt Lake

The thrilling four-game sweep of College of Southern Nevada to put the Western Nevada College baseball team in first place seems like an eternity ago.
 
Since that series, the Wildcats have lost six of eight games, with the slump continuing on Sunday when WNC was swept in a doubleheader at Salt Lake Community College. Salt Lake won the opener 3-2 in nine innings and the nightcap 5-1. The four-run loss was the largest margin of defeat this season for the Wildcats.

Wildcats competitive in losses against CSI

While the Western Nevada College softball team couldn't pull off another upset against one of the nation's top teams, the Wildcats came away from this weekend's series against College of Southern Idaho knowing it could compete with one of the Scenic West Athletic Conference's elite clubs.

CSI swept a doubleheader against WNC on Saturday in Twin Falls, Idaho, winning the opener 6-3 and the nightcap 14-7. WNC was tied with CSI 3-3 going into the bottom of the fifth inning in the opener and led 7-5 in the nightcap.

Senators salvage win in series finale against Miners

It was a demonstration of what could have been. But it also showed what might could be.

Colby Blueberg provided six solid innings on the mound for the win as the Carson High baseball team went on to salvage the final game of a three-game series against Manogue, beating the Miners in the nightcap of a doubleheader 10-5 on Saturday at Ron McNutt Field. Carson lost the opener 14-7.

Big win! Wildcats knock off No. 13 CSI

It's been a long time in coming for the Western Nevada College softball program and a marquee win on Friday demonstrated how far the Wildcats have come.

WNC picked up the biggest win in the program's two-year history with a 6-5 victory at College of Southern Idaho in the second game of a doubleheader in Twin Falls, Idaho. CSI won the opener 8-0.

Loss knocks Senators out of playoff picture

RENO -- When Bishop Manogue's 14th run crossed the plate on an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning, the race was officially over for the Carson High baseball team.
Manogue's 14-4 win in six innings over Carson on Thursday eliminated the Senators from the Northern 4A playoff race. CHS fell to 4-9 in the Sierra League while the Miners improved to 10-6 in league.

Seventh inning rally sinks J.V. Senators

RENO -- Two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning was the difference as the Bishop Manogue J.V. baseball team rallied to beat Carson 2-1 on Thursday afternoon.

Tough night for Rasner and the Eagles

Carson High graduate Darrell Rasner had his second straight outstanding start on the mound late Wednesday night, but was the tough luck loser for the Rakuten Eagles in their 4-0 defeat to the Fakuoka Hawks.
Coming off a complete game effort in which he earned his first win of the year, Rasner allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out six and walking three in six innings against the Hawks. Rasner (1-4) lowered his earned run average to 5.52 in the process.

On the run, Shroy looks forward to being a Cougar

Richard Shroy has made his decision. The Carson High senior, who has won individual state championships in both cross country and on the track, says he will move on to run for Washington State University.
There was no signing, just a handshake, when Shroy made the decision after visiting the Washington State campus in Pullman, Wash., on Sunday and Monday. Needless to say, the 14-hour drive back home to Carson City was enjoyable.

The Carson High softball team took one step closer to realizing its goal of qualifying for the Northern 4A playoffs by winning the opener of a doubleheader against Manogue, 7-2, on Wednesday at CHS. The second game was called in the bottom of the fourth inning with Manogue leading 4-3 due to heavy snow flurries that began to fall.

Ray to play in Cape Cod League

Former Western Nevada College star Lance Ray has been putting up big numbers throughout his college career and his performance has earned him a spot in the country's most prestigious summer amateur baseball league.
Ray, a junior at the University of Kentucky, has signed to play this summer with the Yarmouth Dennis Red Sox in the Cape Cod League. Ray had a huge series this past weekend at Auburn to solidify his spot in the lineup for the Wildcats.

Dayton Valley Golf and Country Club to change ownership, temporarily closed

Dayton Valley Golf and Country Club is temporarily closed and will re-open again in the near future, according to Rick Vaughan, head pro.

The Arnold Palmer-designed golf course and the site of the annual PGA Tour Qualifiers since 1995, is undergoing a change of ownership, Vaughan said in an e-mail.

Ray hits fourth home run of the season for Kentucky

Former Western Nevada College star Lance Ray solidified his spot in the lineup for the University of Kentucky baseball team with a huge series this past weekend at No. 29 Auburn.
Ray, a junior, went 6-for-12 in the series with five doubles and his fourth home run of the season as Kentucky (23-17, 6-12 in the Southeastern Conference) lost two of three at Auburn. Ray, who played outfield and first base in the series, also had seven RBI in the series and now has seven doubles on the season.

Barnett continues his hot April for Wolf Pack

University of Nevada outfielder Brian Barnett, who played at Western Nevada College the last two years, continued his hot month of April at the plate this past weekend against Fresno State at Peccole Park.
