Ski Patrol races at Squaw Valley

April 16 through April 18, 2010, Squaw Valley is hosting the first ever nation-wide Professional Ski Patrol Olympics. Competitions ranging from simulated bomb throws to a GS race down some of Squaw Valley’s most difficult terrain will take place by the Headwall chairlift on Saturday, April 17 and Sunday, April 18.
Spectators and patrollers alike can watch the head-to-head battles from theCornice II snow lounge featuring barbequed food and PBR for sale.
Patrollers from all over the country and Canada will be competing for glory and a $1,500 cash purse and prizes compliments of Helly Hansen.

RENO -- Carson High appeared to be in a good position going to the bottom of the third inning holding a 2-1 lead and with ace David Charles on the mound against Damonte Ranch on Thursday afternoon.
However, one infield error and a missed opportunity to cut down a run at the plate led to five unearned Damonte Ranch runs in that third inning and the Mustangs went on to post a 10-2 victory in the opener of a three-game Sierra League series.

RENO -- Six players collected multiple hits and the Carson High J.V. baseball team put together two big innings to secure a 10-4 Sierra League victory against Damonte Ranch on Thursday afternoon.

Wildcats return home for North Idaho series

Losing three of four games last weekend was obviously not what Western Nevada College softball coach Leah Wentworth wanted to see. However, the coach hopes lessons learned from those losses against Colorado Northwestern Community College will come back to provide a silver lining for the rest of the season.The Wildcats (4-24, 5-29) gained experience in close games, losing three straight Rangely, Colo., that were decided by a total of six runs -- 3-1, 7-5 (on a walkoff home run in the seventh inning) and 4-2 -- before securing a 4-3 win in the finale on Saturday.

Senators face tough test against Damonte Ranch

Despite coming out with advantages in back-to-back series against Sierra League opponents the last two weekends, there is still no room for the Carson High softball team to rest.
Now, the Senators (5-4 league, 6-6 overall) face a big challenge against league-leading Damonte Ranch in a three-game series that begins on Thursday afternoon in Reno. The teams open with a 3:30 p.m. single game at Damonte Ranch, then move over to Carson for a doubleheader at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Carson High grad umpires behind the plate at Aces Ballpark

RENO – Every chance is a stepping stone to Nate White's ultimate goal – becoming a Major League Baseball umpire.
So when White, a 2003 Carson High graduate, received the chance to umpire behind the plate in Tuesday night's exhibition game between the Reno Aces and the University of Nevada at Aces Ballpark, White jumped at the opportunity. But White wasn't wide eyed at all as he conducted himself like he belonged.

Smokey's 83 leads Senators at Fallon

All five scoring players shot in the 80s and the Carson High boys golf team finished fifth during a Sierra League match on Tuesday at The Golf Course at Fallon.
Sophomore Roman Smokey shot 83 to lead the Senators, who finished with a 433 team total. Carson now has fourth- and fifth-place finishes in two league matches and is in contention to take one of the four qualifying berths for the Northern 4A Regional Tournament next month.

It's time for the skinny skier, skiers, snowshoers and fit bodies race up the mountain in the Annual Billy Dutton Uphill, in honor of late local luminary, Billy Dutton. The original “run what ya brung” race is an uphill answer to the famous ‘Chinese Downhill’ of the 70s. Starting from the bottom of KT-22, the course climbs 2,000 vertical feet over 3.2 miles to the finish at High Camp, at 8,200 feet.
It's enough to take your breath away just thinking about it.
The Billy Dutton Uphill race is open to Nordic skiers, snowshoers, runners and outdoor enthusiasts of all ages.

WNC keeps playoff hopes alive

The Western Nevada College softball team picked up a much needed win that likely kept its playoff hopes alive.
After losing the first three games in its series at Colorado Northwestern, the Wildcats pulled out a 4-3 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday. WNC lost the opener 4-2.
WNC (5-29, 4-24) is now tied with Colorado Northwestern with four wins in the Scenic West Athletic Conference. WNC and Colorodo Northwestern finished 4-4 against each other in conference play.

The Western Nevada College baseball team now finds itself in a pennant race

WNC finished off a four-game sweep at Colorado Northwestern Community College on Saturday by winning both games of a doubleheader. The Wildcats won the opener 15-0 and then in a scheduled nine-inning game, had to score four runs in the ninth inning to pull out an 8-4 win.
The Wildcats (26-9) moved into second place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference after College of Southern Nevada took three of four games from Salt Lake Community College this weekend. WNC is 14-6 in the SWAC and trails CSN (17-3) by three games. Salt Lake fell to 12-7 in the SWAC.
  
 

The heat is on for CHS

RENO – For the Carson High baseball team, the heat is on. But to CHS coach Cody Farnworth, the heat is always on.
"It's on every week," said Farnworth after his team was swept in a doubleheader on Saturday at Galena, losing the opener 10-1 and the nightcap 8-5. "It doesn't change."

Carson High fifth in NIAA Award of Excellence standings

Carson High remained in the top five in the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association's Award of Excellence standings after the winter sports season.
The Award of Excellence program rates the best overall high school sports programs in Nevada based on how well schools do in athletic competition, in academics and in sportsmanship. The sportsmanship portion of the points standings is added after the spring sports season.

While nothing can be taken for granted, there's no away around it. These are four wins the Western Nevada College baseball team is expected to pick up.
So when snow threatened to postpone one or both games on Friday at Colorado Northwestern Community College, the Wildcats had to be worried. These are wins that WNC needs in the Scenic West Athletic Conference and any games that are lost and not made up could obviously be costly in the SWAC race.

WNC softball club loses twice in Colorado

It was a frustrating day for the Western Nevada College softball team, which dropped a doubleheader on Friday at Colorado Northwestern Community College in Scenic West Athletic Conference action.
 
WNC (4-28, 3-23) lost the opener 4-3 and the nightcap 7-5. The Wildcats fell in the nightcap when Colorado Northwestern hit a two-out, game-winning two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 5-5 tie.
