Northstar gets more new snow, announces events

The snow continued to fall Wednesday at Lake Tahoe and on Northstar and is forecast to continue through the weekend. Here's a couple of upcoming events, as well as a few new offerings at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort through the end of this winter season:

Lots of snow and deals at Squaw Valley

Skiers and riders can enjoy a full month of Lake Tahoe spring skiing for less than $7 per day with Squaw Valley's Spring Pass, on sale now for $199. In addition to spring skiing and riding starting April 11, 2011, this year’s Squaw Valley Spring Pass includes free access to the High Camp Swimming Lagoon and Spa for Spring 2011 and free Summer Cable Car access — all for less than the price of three full-day lift tickets. Opening gala for world's top cyclists at Lake Tahoe's MontBleu

Snow for Show: Heavenly's 'Winter of all Winters'

The latest storm to hit South Lake Tahoe helped boost Heavenly Mountain Resort's year-to-date snow totals well past the 400-inch mark, or more than 30 feet, roughly enough snow to cover the famous Babe the Blue Ox statue in Klamath, Calif.

This is the third-best snow season in Heavenly’s history and forecasters are predicting as much as six more feet before this round of storms clears.

Kinder Kup Ski Race Series Final Event This Sunday

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will host the Kinder Kup Race Series finals at Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain Resort on Sunday, March 20, 2011 from 8a m to 2 pm.

Open to all skiers and snowboarders age six and under (as of Dec. 31, 2010), the Kinder Kup series at Lake Tahoe is designed to introduce young athletes to competition in a friendly environment. No previous race experience necessary. Entry is $20 and includes a World Cup only competitor lift ticket.

Volunteer opportunities available for Amgen Tour of California Lake Tahoe stages

The 2011 Amgen Tour of California, the largest cycling event in North America, recently announced that volunteer opportunities have been posted on their official website, www.AmgenTourofCalifornia.com, for the race, including opportunities for Stage 1 and 2 at Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe kicks off first stages of Amgen Tour of California

Organizers of the the 2011 Amgen Tour of California, the largest cycling event in North America, announced today the Stage 1 and Stage 2 race routes for Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe’s first-ever involvement in the race as the official Overall Start is Sunday, May 15 and begins at South Lake Tahoe at 6,300 feet, the highest start elevation in the six-year history of the competition. Stage 1 wraps up in North Lake Tahoe at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort, with the Stage 2 Start taking place nearby at Squaw Valley USA on Monday, May 16.

Carson City ice rink extends operations through end of February

Good news for ice skaters: The Carson City Recreation Department has extended the season through Feb. 27 for the Arlington Square Ice Rink.

The extended season will continue through the end of February at the Arlington ice facility and pavilion, located at the Main Street parking lot across from the Carson Nugget, at the corner of Robinson and Curry streets in downtown Carson City. The new and extended hours of operation are as follows:

Snowshoe treks on tap throughout Tahoe

There's plenty going on out there for snowshoe fans around Lake Tahoe. I've enjoyed the sport but haven't tried the big foot stuff of late. Here's what's snowshoeing these days:

— Go with Tony Berendsen at Northstar-at-Tahoe at 5 p.m. Dec. 30 at Northstar. Tony is a poet and astronomer and offers Star Gazing Snowshoe tours. Snow's here, time to hit the slopes this weekend

Tahoe is off to its best opening for snowsports in years with most resorts operating on a limited basis, but many offering top to bottom runs. Snow is good, not fluffy but not wet so it's like powder days at many mountain resorts.

Sierra-at-Tahoe to open Tuesday; top to bottom on Wednesday

Looks like a great snowsport season ahead as Tahoe resorts are opening all over, the latest being Sierra-at-Tahoe on Tuesday.

La Niña has dropped more than six feet of snow since Friday when the storm first rolled in and forecasters are calling for another 2 to 4 feet possible late Monday. It's cold, it's dry, it's white and it's ski time.
