Blood inventory low going into Memorial weekend; Carson City drives Tuesday and Saturday

Due to extremely high usage throughout the region and other factors, the Reno and Carson City area blood supply is currently below ideal levels approaching Memorial Day weekend. All blood types are needed, but local inventory for Blood Type O negative has been hovering at or below a one-day supply, while Vitalant strives to keep a four-day supply of all blood types ready.

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Carson City Triad presents “Get Your Ducks in a Row – Legal Documents Every Senior Should Have” by Colby Prout of Nevada Legal Services Tuesday, May 21 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive. The event is free and open to the public.

Participants who attend will learn about intestate succession, small estates, will basics, avoiding probate and will be provided with information about powers of attorney.

Dahl's Pharmacy in Carson City has moved into a new and familiar location on Curry Street in the building that was formerly Mike's Pharmacy.

The family owned and operated independent Dahl's Pharmacy closed its location on North Carson Street and will reopen this Monday, May 13, at 1007 North Curry Street.

The first of two Partnership Carson City prescription drug roundups of 2019 was a public safety success. Saturday’s community event netted 414 pounds of pills and 137 pounds of needles.

Carson City residents trained in administering drug to reverse overdose

Drake Dembke has lost two friends to opioid overdose. One was dropped off by his friends in front of the emergency room, the other was left by the side of the road.
“As a recovering heroin addict myself, I’ve seen what it does,” he said. “It sucks.”

Nevada’s statewide opioid coordinator speaks to 600 Carson High School freshmen

CARSON CITY — Terry Kerns, substance abuse and law enforcement coordinator with the Nevada Office of the Attorney General, spoke at Carson High School on Thursday morning to more than 300 freshmen about the opioid crisis facing Nevada and the science of addiction. She will offer the same presentation again tomorrow to the remaining 300 freshmen on the same topics.

Carson Valley student places first in statewide, 2nd in national radon poster contest

Carson Valley Middle School student Ana Marquez, from Minden, placed second in the National Radon Poster Contest, after taking home first place in the Nevada Radon Poster Contest. She competed against student winners from 10 other states and will receive $300 for her poster, “Radon: Test Your Home Now.”

After watching a video in her freshman health class at Carson High School, Emily Tierney, 14, learned that some of the behaviors that may seem normal in a dating relationship could actually be problematic.

“I didn’t know some of those things could be red flags, like jealousy,” she said.
