Nevada’s Area Council of Boys Scouts of America honor adult leadership

Pinenut District of Nevada’s Area Council of Boys Scouts of America takes time out every February to recognize its adult leadership. This leadership puts in untold hours to volunteer and provide Scouting programs to all ages of youth.
Honored at the District’s February Roundtable were:

Boy Scout group of the Comstock has members from Dayton, Virginia City

Boy Scout Troop 847 continues to serve the young men of the Comstock. Meeting weekly at the Mark Twain Community Center, 500 Sam Clemens Avenue in Dayton, the Troop currently has 14 registered Scouts from Dayton and Virginia City.

The Troop’s program and operations are youth-run under the leadership of Senior Patrol Leader Star Scout Joshua Baughman and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader Star Scout Matthew McGifford. Under the mentorship of Scoutmaster Bill Boston and three Assistant Scoutmasters, these Scouts strive to provide a quality program of Scout activities.

Applebee’s is the place to be for dinner tonight if you want to help the 2015 Carson City Leadership Class raise funds for the children’s area of the Carson City Library. You do need to bring the flyer with you if you want Applebee's to donate a portion of your bill. Print it out or grab a copy at the Library’s youth desk.

Heartsafe Community approaches save another life at East Fork

During summer of 2014, a gentleman was jogging on Windmill Road in Fish Springs when he suffered sudden cardiac arrest. The gentlemen, who had no previous history of heart problems, collapsed in view of a bicyclist. The bicyclist was a nurse and immediately went to the jogger and provided CPR while flagging down two passing gentlemen who called 9-1-1.

By the time 9-1-1 was called, the three bystanders were cycling through CPR to pump blood through the jogger’s body until additional help could arrive to try to restart the heart.

Band/Choir Concert

The Capital City Community Band will present its annual "A Salute to Young Musicians" concert on Sunday, March 15th at 3:00 p.m., at the Carson City Community Center. This concert will feature three elementary choirs from Carson City. This concert promises to be a fun concert for all!

Mark your calendars for Thursday April 30, 2015 for the fifth annual Dining Out For Life™ event held in Reno, Sparks and Carson City. When you dine out at a participating restaurant on this one special day, you'll be helping to end HIV in Nevada, just by enjoying a good meal out.

Elk's Hoop Shoot: Carson City boy advances to national competition

The Elk’s National Foundation Hoop Shoot is a free throw contest held annually. The contest begins at the local lodge level. Children between the ages of 8 and 13 are invited to compete. Across the nation over a million children compete in this contest with the hope of making it all the way to the Springfield, Massachusetts to compete at the Basketball Hall of Fame and win the National Competition.

Grab your dance shoes and kick up your heels at a beginning swing dance lesson at El Charro’s tonight. The High Sierra Swing Dance Club hosts its monthly Swing Dance Party in the Ballroom of the Brewery Arts Center Saturday night. If you prefer to dance in cowboy boots, you can learn Country Line and Partner Dancing at the 11th Frame Lounge in Carson Lanes every Tuesday and Wednesday night.

Groundbreaking Thursday for Carson City Multi-Athletic Center gymnasium project

The Carson City Parks and Recreation Department will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday for the New Multi-Athletic Center, also known as the MAC, gymnasium project. The ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m., headed up by the Carson City Board of Supervisors.

Applebee's fundraiser Wednesday to raise money for children's library improvements

The Carson City Leadership Class of 2015 is hosting a fundraiser at Applebee's 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25. Applebee's will donate 15 percent of the night's proceeds to improve the children's area at the library.

Eagle Valley Middle School continues to grow

Eagle Valley Middle School (EVMS) has a rich history and remains determined and focused to provide quality educational opportunities to the families it serves. Looking forward with its success from the past, EVMS is involved in a number of current endeavors, two of which will be highlighted here.

Just another Monday in the Capital City. The Legislative Gallery has a new offering: Natural Memorial Realist by artist Max Bunnell of Overton. The gallery rotates every two weeks. The CCAI Gallery in the Courthouse features Nevada Watersheds by Nolan Preece, and the Nevada Artists Association is hosting their Winter Art Show at the Brewery Arts Center.

Senator Square: Late start days ahead next month at Carson High School

Coming up March 2 through March 5 will be late start days at Carson High School. Students who are taking the proficiency tests will begin their school day at the regular time of 7:45 am, while those not taking the proficiencies will start their school day at 10:30 a.m.

Silver Sage 4-H Club field trip to Fast Frames

On Saturday, Feb. 21, the Silver Sage 4-H Club attended a field trip at FastFrame in Carson Valley. Owner Joe Rousse took time to discuss matting and framing with the group.

He took a simple landscape and showed how dramatically different it looked by varying the mats and frames. Everyone got a hands-on chance to see how different mat combinations looked around photos.

The Brewery Arts Center is hosting Mixed Company as part of its new Eclectic Electric series. The party is at Remedy’s; the blacklight body paint Mardi Gras Masquerade starts at 9pm, with the talented Lynzie Ruecker doing free body paint and music by DJ Justincredible.

Dick Campagni’s Carson City Toyota Scion launches Boys and Girls Club Community Challenge

Mr. Dick Campagni, former Board Member and long-time supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, is challenging the community to donate to the Club in support of the 3,000 children served each year in Carson City and Carson Valley.
Donations can made between now through April 30, 2015 and will be matched up to $10,000.

The Pizza Factory on Hwy 50 East is holding a fundraiser for Eagle Valley Middle School today. 20% of the day’s proceeds will benefit their Parent Teacher Organization.

It’s a great day for the arts in Carson City today. An artist reception honoring Sarah Lillegard will be held at the Nevada Arts Council where her exhibit ‘Second Skin’ is on display. Sande Rowan will share knowledge about baskets around the world in the first of six ‘The Work of Artists’ SENarts events. The Galaxy Theatre brings the Metropolitan Opera back to Carson City this week with an Encore showing of Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, the live showing occurred Saturday morning.

Senator Square: CHS Leadership puts 'Love Thy Community' theme to work

Hey Carson City, the Carson High Leadership class is organizing a clean-up day at Mills Park for Thursday, Feb. 26 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. This month, Carson High Leadership is focusing on Love Thy Community.
So every week, Carson High's Student Council will be encouraging their fellow students to clean up in several different ways: they will be making posters and flyers and putting them up around the school, it will be on the announcements, and every Thursday of Friday they will be passing out a reward when they see other students cleaning up.

Carson City Dutch Bros. gives $1,200 to Boys and Girls Club through customer donations

Carson City Dutch Bros. owners, Andy and Jill Head (right), present a check in the amount for $1,200 to Laurie Gorris, Chief Professional Officer, and Cliff Sorensen, Board Member, of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada.

​The money was raised during the month of December through customer donations and Dutch Bros.' annual Buck for Kids Day.
