Carson City Democratic Women's Club Monthly Meeting

The Carson City Democratic Women's Club Meeting will be held at headquarters, 502 E John Sttreet, Saturday Auguat 9, 2014. Doors open at 9:30 AM and a light bteakfast will be available. The program begins at 10 AM. Featured speakers are Supreme Court Justice Hardesty who will explain Measure 1 on the November Ballot which is to add an Appellate Court system to Nevada.

'Feds Feed Families' food drive at Carson City Third and Curry Street Farmers Market

“Feds Feed Families” a food drive to benefit the hungry in Carson City, will be accepting donations and cleaned produce at the Aug. 9 and again Aug. 16 at the Third and Curry Street Farmer’s Market in Carson City.

Donations will benefit the Ron Wood Family Resource Center, a local food pantry that provides emergency rations for about 425 families each week.

Pam Winebarger, the food bank and volunteer coordinator, said the need in the community is great.

“We are seeing many more families in need, and seniors too, which is sad,” she said.

Four-year-old's food drive effort for Carson City’s hungry culminates Sunday at Ross Gold Park

A very young Northern Nevada boy has set out on a very mature mission on behalf of his community. Four-year-old Garrett Triner says he doesn’t want to see people go hungry and told his mother, Randi Vigna, he wanted to do something about it after he saw a homeless man on the sidewalk.

The boy asked his mom several questions about hunger and food and why people sometimes go without. That’s when the idea came up to do a food drive, which is happening this weekend with a drop off Sunday at Ross Gold Park in Carson City from 2 to 5 p.m.

Donations sought, families invited to Saturday back to school clothing drive

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hosts its sixth annual clothing drive to help families in Carson City, Minden, Gardnerville, and Dayton, Nevada communities get ready for school.

The event is open to the public on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel located at 411 N. Saliman Road, Carson City.

David Haws, President of the church’s local organization, says families are invited to pick up needed clothing in preparation for the new school year.

August Authors Event at Dayton Valley Library

On Saturday, August 16 from 3-5 PM, the Friends of the Dayton Valley Library will host an author’s book discussion and sales at the Dayton Branch Library in Dayton, Nev. Wine and beer will be available for purchase. A donation of $3.00 will be asked at the door and the price of admission will entitle the patron to one glass of wine or a beer. Children are welcome for no charge as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

Cause Warrior Ride Passes Through Dayton, Northern Nevada

In early morning fog on Sunday, July 20, 2014, a team of six riders began a 70-day long journey across the U.S. to bring awareness and support to today’s wounded warriors and their families. The 2014 Cause Warrior Ride Team will stop in over 70 cities and towns along the route to historic West Point in New York. They arrived in Dayton, NV on Friday, July 25, departing the following morning.

Western Nevada College “Always Lost: A Meditation on War”

Douglas County is hosting the Western Nevada College “Always Lost: A Meditation on War” arts and humanities exhibition as part of a special Nevada Sesquicentennial tour sponsored by the Nevada Department of Veterans Services (NDVS). We are ecstatic to report we found our little cat this morning. My 2 1/2 years old grandson was in the backyard this morning yelling out "Dora where are you" and she started calling back to him Very Loud. She was up a few houses between a shed and fence. I first thought it was her brother out looking for her as well. My granddaughter went looking and discovered it was Dora. Thank you to everyone who helped by posting her information and spending time to look for her. She was hungry buy otherwise in good shape.

Saturday evenings are stellar this summer at the Jack C. Davis Observatory of Western Nevada College. A series of free slide lectures will be offered through August 23. Doors open at 7 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. lectures.

Through InfoSnap, our secure and green online enrollment system, parents are able to verify all student demographic, emergency and medical information for their child prior to the start of the new school year.

Returning Students: An instructional mailer will be sent home to all existing students in August. This mailer will contain instructions on how to access online enrollment to update their student’s information.

Uganda Orphan Choir in Carson City

The Uganda Orphans Choir will perform an uplifting concert this Sunday evening, 6:30 p.m. at First Christian Church in Carson City. The message of overcoming and triumph in the face of trying and difficult circumstances will be inspiring. The performance is free.

Dogs of War Poker Run Saturday to benefit veterans

Ed’s Dog House and the Spoke Bar and Grill in Carson City in conjunction with the WNC Veterans Resource Center invite all riders to participate in the first 'Dogs of War Poker Run.

All proceeds from this event will go to support Veterans in need from our community, a portion going to a WW2 Veteran who was victimized during a home invasion on Memorial Day.

ESL 10th Year Award Ceremony

June 28, 2014 was a gala day for many of our most disadvantaged families, as 42 adults from the ESL in-home Program of Northern Nevada, a no-cost-to-student program, were presented with certificates of achievement in English language and literacy. The program also tutors GED preparation and Citizenship Study at no cost.

Truckee River Cleanup July 12

The University's partner in this event, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, will be providing the tools and the training.

A few things to note:

1. Water will be provided, but bring a water bottle.
2. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.
3. Bring sunscreen and wear a hat.
4. Bring work gloves if you have them.
