Carson City emergency crews respond to large gas leak at Nevada and William streets; evacuation lifted

UPDATE 3:54PM: The evacuation has been lifted for homes and businesses around the area of Nevada and William Street following a gas leak earlier this afternoon. The area is now considered safe and free of gas vapors. Carson City Public Works and Southwest Gas remain on the scene.

UPDATE 3:37PM: The gas leak at Nevada and William Street has been stopped. Carson City firefighters are now processing the area to determine when it is deemed safe to allow people back into homes and businesses. The city has provided an updated map of the affected area. It can be found at maps.carson.org.

Structure fire reported on Tiger Drive in Carson City

UPDATE 5:15PM: A fire started in a mobile home shortly before 4:30 p.m. Saturday has been knocked down, according to the Carson City Fire Department.
Several engines were on scene Saturday afternoon to battle a blaze that had fully engulfed a home in a mobile home park on Tiger Drive in Carson City.
NV Energy and Southwest Gas utility trucks had also arrived on scene to shut off utilities to the residence.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Family pets killed in fire overnight at south shore Lake Tahoe duplex

A New Year's Eve fire destroyed a south shore Lake Tahoe duplex, leaving six people without a home and killing three family pets, fire officials said Sunday.

Carson City Fire Department investigate gas leak on Research Way

The Carson City Fire Department was called Friday afternoon to a gas leak at 3325 Research Way, Nevada Health Center.
The call came into dispatch just after 1 p.m. with reports of a heavy natural gas odor coming from the building, according to dispatch. The building was evacuated and an investigation was underway.

Paiute Pipeline scheduled maintenance through Friday in Carson City and Carson Valley

Crews from Paiute Pipeline Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Southwest Gas Corporation, and its contractors, will perform maintenance on its natural gas transmission pipeline in Carson City and Carson Valley this Tuesday through Friday.

Carson City Fire Department called to report of brush fire near Goni water tank

UPDATE 2:28PM: The 30-foot by 30-foot fire near the Goni water tank has been extinguished. There are two brush crews on scene, said Carson City Fire Chief Bob Schreihans.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and is thought to be suspicious, said Stacey Belt, spokeswoman for the fire department.

Firefighters were called shortly before 2 p.m. for a report of a brush fire. Fire engines are responding, citizens and motorists should stay clear of the area.

Gas, water line breaks reported Friday morning

UPDATE 10:50AM: The gas line break at Third and Curry has been cleared, according to Carson City Dispatch. The line has been fixed and fire crews have left the scene.

Fire crews battle apartment fire in Gardnerville

East Fork Fire crews are tending to a three-alarm fire in the apartments between Raley’s and Smith’s in Gardnerville Tuesday evening. At least six units have been declared uninhabitable.

The initial report came in around 5:45 p.m. Occupants are being referred to the Red Cross of Northern Nevada. NV Energy and Southwest Gas are on scene. The Nevada Highway Patrol is assisting with crowd control.

Vehicle crash at Hot Springs Road apartment causes gas leak and evacuation, one injured

UPDATE: 11:48PM: At least one person inside an apartment was injured after being struck by a vehicle the caused a gas leak in the 600 block of Old Hot Spring Road. The crash forced the evacuation of 15 to 20 people before the broken gas lines were sealed.
The male adult victim was taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries, said Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Scott McDaniel.

6th Annual CHS Safe & Sober 5k Run/Walk a Success

Carson City weekend arrest log: Man admits to stealing equipment from former employer

A 56-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday after admitting to breaking into the maintenance yard of his former employer to steal material goods to use on his own home, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

UPDATE: Southwest Gas and Carson City Fire Department have gone through the building. The issue has been turned over to building maintenance and employees have been allowed back into the building.

Carson City Fire Department knock down structure fire on Sheffield Manor

Carson City Fire Department responded to the 2000 block of Sheffield Manor this afternoon for a structure fire. Crews and engines were called at around 3:40 p.m. after a report of smoke coming from the structure. At 3:53 p.m. the fire was knocked down, according to dispatch. No injuries were reported.

Gas explosion damages two vehicles, interrupts traffic on U.S. 395 and Mica Drive

An apparent gas main leak at the entrance to the Sunridge subdivision caused an explosion that damaged at least two vehicles and disrupted traffic on Highway 395 and Mica Drive in Douglas County.

NV Energy rates for electric customers to decrease by 4 percent

Beginning Thursday, NV Energy residential, commercial and industrial electric customers will see an overall rate decrease of 4 percent. This is the second consecutive quarter for electric rate decreases, according to the utility.

Hearing set for proposed Southwest Gas rate hike

There will be a Sept. 15 public hearing in Carson City on a proposed rate application by Southwest Gas for its customers. The utility proposes to increase the average Northern Nevada residential customer monthly bill an estimated $2.13 during summer and $7.63 in winter.

Northern Nevada JobConnect host job fairs this week in Reno and Carson City

Nevada JobConnect will hold two job fairs this week, Wednesday, in Reno and Thursday in Carson City. The job fairs are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.

The job fair on Wednesday will be held at the Summit Mall at 13945 S. Virginia Street, Suite 636 in Reno and the Thursday job fair will be held at the Carson City Fuji Park Exhibit Hall at 601 Old Clear Creek Road.

Salvation Army 2015 Apple Tree Back Pack and school supplies drive underway

The Salvation Army is collecting Back Packs and School Supplies for disadvantaged children through August 13th. The Salvation Army has been getting calls from families in need for several weeks asking for help. Children from Carson City School District, Silver State Charter School, and Douglas County School District will receive all back packs and school supplies that are collected.

5th Annual CHS Safe and Sober 5k Run/Walk a Success

The 5th annual CHS Safe and Sober 5k Run/Walk was a tremendous success with turn-out of 113 participants. The weather cleared up this morning and with just a bit of wind at race time, we couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather, maybe even a sunburn.

Carson High Safe Grad program has been an annual tradition in Carson City since 1988. It provides our graduating seniors with a safe and sober, all night celebration on the evening of their graduation, followed by an optional trip to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom amusement park in Northern California.

New state employment director Don Soderberg begins duties

Nevada's new Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation director, Don Soderberg, begins his duties today, Oct. 13. He was appointed by Gov. Brian Sandoval last month and will serve serve as a member of the Sandoval's cabinet overseeing the daily operations of the employment division which includes more than 1,000 staff members in multiple offices statewide.

Southwest Gas proposes 31 cent winter rate hike adjustment for Northern Nevada customers

Southwest Gas is seeking a 2015 rate adjustment hike of around 31 cents a month in winter and 8 cents during summer for Northern Nevada customers, according to the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada.

There will be a consumer session on Thursday, Sept. 18 to hear comments regarding the annual rate adjustment application. Southwest Gas also proposes to increase the average Southern Nevada residential customer monthly bill an estimated 9 cents during the summer and 27 cents in winter. If approved by the commission, the company proposes the rate changes take effect Jan. 1, 2015.
