The Orchestra Program of Carson City School District is holding its Holiday Concert Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Just the idea of a concert in Carson City is exciting enough, but it gets even better because this musical event will cost audiences absolutely nothing except a little time and effort getting there. Admission is free.

The Orchestra Program of the Carson City School District will hold its Holiday Concert on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center.

Everyone in Carson City is invited, always invited, to come on out and support the CHS athletic teams and programs, especially when so many of these individuals and teams have been so successful. A great many athletic events are happening this week and beyond with regional competitions in soccer, and state competitions in tennis and cross country.

Carson High School cheerleaders cheered as they entered Walmart in Carson City and then performed two more cheers on top of that. There is an old saying found in a very old book which says, “You have not because you ask not.”

The results of the Carson High Schol HOSA Future Health Professionals career display winners are in, and the 1st Place winners are Faith Luis and Ava Ponczoch, 2nd Place are Millie Arroyo and Julia Kaiser, and 3rd Place winners are Brooklyn Robertson and Nick Batien.

Hello from CHS in Carson City. I want to share this information with you so that you may be able to come and support our many students participating in Fall Sports. The list below has upcoming events for each sport in which our new Athletic Leadership Council is going to push out to their teams and friends to come support one another. In the spirit of unity, we want to reach out to both the staff and community to invite all of you to do the same.

Homecoming, first seen in 1911 at the University of Missouri, is a wonderful event celebrated throughout the US at high schools and colleges. Homecoming is more than just a football game, it encompasses multiple celebratory events such as bonfires, tailgate parties, dances, and the crowning of a King and Queen. Fall is in the air in Carson City, and a change in the weather was one more reason for kids and adults alike to get out and celebrate this year’s Disney themed Happiest Homecoming on Earth.

We're heading into the midweek, Wednesday, August 21, 2019 with sunny skies and activities throughout the day including day 2 of the Jukebox International Film Festival at the Carson City Community Center, Jazz and Beyond festival performances to complement Wheeled Food Wednesday at the BAC followed by a classic outdoor movie to boot, "West Side Story." There's also a free creative event: "Community Art Card, Creating Social Circle" at Comma Coffee, Salsa dancing and more. Enjoy the day.

Having made it through the first day of school in Carson City, it is onward and upward as we head into Tuesday, August 20, 2019. Events around the area include fitness hikes and bike ride, a free floral design class at Silver City School House, art showings and Congressman Mark Amodei at Casino Fandango. Also featured is the launch of the Jukebox International Film Festival at the community center, a jazz quintet performance at Comma Courtyard and the 115th birthday celebration of Count Basie as part of the Jazz and Beyond music festival. Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days, including the Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival, a bluegrass festival at Bowers Mansion, Celtic favorites at the BAC, tours at the Nevada State Museum, train rides, standup comedy at the Carson Nugget, a block party at Silver Oak Golf Course, a Boy Scouts car show at Fuji Park, "'Kutz for Kids' and more.

Heading into Thursday, August 15, 2019 we can expect hot weather to continue with high temperatures near 100. Among events for the day, there will be a wreath remembrance ceremony for fallen Carson City law enforcement officers at the sheriff's office, a Muscle Powered morning hike, art showings, and a meeting of the Status of Women in Nevada group at the Carson Nugget. As part of the Jazz and Beyond music festival, there will be an outdoor "Woodstock Remembered" concert at Comma Coffee and a music presentation, "All About that Bass" by Scot Marshall and Friends at the Nevada State Museum.

Are you in need of a good car cleaning? Come to Carson High School on Saturday, August 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and support the Carson High School Girls and Boys Soccer Program. Pre-sale is $5 a vehicle. At the car wash, it is $7 to $10 depending on the size of the vehicle. Carson High School is located at 1111 N. Saliman Road.

There's a new group for writers that meets at the Brewery Arts Center; a salary negotiation workshop at WNC, a chautauqua and author presentations at Dangberg Historic Park. There's also the Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival that will feature the Wesley Orsolic Trio during Wheeled Food Wednesday at the BAC, with jams to continue at Living the Good Life; there's also a real estate workshop for veterans, art showings, salsa dancing and more. Heading into Tuesday, August 13, there's a galaxy of events lined up, beginning at midnight with a meteor shower watch party at WNC's Jack C. Davis Observatory. When the sun arrives there's fitness events, a book talk at the Nevada State Library and Archives, outdoor Carson City jazz festival happenings at Comma Coffee and Bob McFadden Plaza, family movie night at the library and more. Heading into the first day of the work week, if you're an early, early riser or are settling in for the night, you'll want to step outside at around 3 a.m. for the peak of the Perseid shower, which will be in the eastern sky. If you missed them, there will be a viewing party hosted by Carson City Parks and Rec at the Jack C. Davis Observatory at WNC beginning at midnight Tuesday morning, August 13. Otherwise, it's onward and upward into the day with a Cooperative Extension presentation, Shred Kids mountain bike camp, Red Cross sitter certification class, West Coast swing dancing and more.

Heading into the middle of the work week, we're looking at partly cloudy skies, a chance of thunderstorms and a bevy of happenings around the Carson City area. Heading into Tuesday Aug. 6, which means the safest family celebration of the year at the 17th annual Carson City National Night Out. This is an event like no other, where agencies who work in areas of public health and safety gather at Mills Park to meet with Carson City residents. This event features 3 hours of information booths, games, demonstrations, food and fun. Also happening Tuesday is a free robotics mini-camp for kids in nearby Silver City, Reciprocity Inc. will host a fundraiser at Rustically Divine, there's the Culinary Traveler’s Club's Polynesian Paradise featured at Bleu Café; the Carson City Classic Cinema Club will feature a Sci-Fi favorite at the BAC, plus fitness outings and more. Each year, thousands of homeless and at-risk children in our local communities return to school without the basic supplies they need.

Operation Backpack is able to provide thousands of backpacks, grade-specific school supplies, and a variety of support services to homeless, at-risk and foster children from Pre-school to High School levels throughout the Northern Nevada regions.

Carson City Soroptimist will present grant awards to two women, and honor the achievements of local high school seniors, on Wednesday, May 22, noon to 1 p.m. at Glen Eagles. The meeting is open to the public, with prior reservations required.

April was an action packed month as several Carson High School clubs put on The Friendship Ball, A Night Under the Big Top Father Daughter Ball, and The Greatest Show on Earth 2019 Prom. Even more amazing than the dances are the students behind the scenes who, with the guidance of Leadership Adviser Ann Britt and FBLA Adviser Angila Golik, transformed the CHS Big Gym so that all visitors, young and old alike, would think they had walked into a beautiful dream.

Going solo, regardless the venture, can be a scary thought. Add a violin, a complex classical piece, and an audience of a couple hundred music enthusiasts, and a whole different kind of focus is required.

Such is not a new experience for 2018 Sierra Lutheran High School alumna Aleyna Gilson, who will find the spotlight on her again at the end of this month when she performs Mendelssohn’s concerto in E minor at the Orchestra Concerto Concert at Point Loma Nazarene University, in San Diego.

Dear Friends, happy spring time! While our newest season officially arrived March 20th, it seems just now I am starting to believe winter is finally losing its grip and giving way to the kinder, gentler, days of spring. With each day, I see a little more of the renewal of life we have come to associate with this time of year.
